What do people find as the best to feed?
My boy is on oats at the mo however I'm at my wits end as the birds sift through his poo to find the undigested bits and spread everything for miles.
He's (the horse that is not the birds!!) 17.3hh and out 24/7 and I compete him at Aff Dressage. He can be quite lazy and as he's so large I need some help with the whole going off my leg.

Try Power and Performance from Allen and Page. Fab feed, as is lower in starch than some so works for sustained energy. Don't like some of the starchy fast release feeds as they're not ideal for the horses digestion!

the birds spreading and eating the poo really isnt a bad thing.

Also if there are undisgested oats in his pooh.. then he really is crapping out your money.

At they whole oats or are they rolled?

Muscle and fitness is also a bit part in energy.. if the horse isnt physically fit then he isnt going to be able to maintain energy regardless of what you but into him.

If he is fit, Then the feed I would recommend is Winergy B or a good quality competition mix. Both fed along with blue chip feed balencer.

The trouble with the little feathered beings spreading his poo is that I have severe arthritis in each hand so it makes poo picking even harder.
He is a fit chap but just a lazy sausage and I do appreciate he's pooing my money away (don't they all!!) hence time for a change.
The difference I find when he's on a higher energy food is after we've competed I do not come out of the test the colour of a beetroot, sweating profusely and ready to collapse! Remind me what part of this do I enjoy? Ok, all of it really!

I've just been recommended the A&P Power and Performance, but only started my boy on it yesterday so can't comment yet!

He was on Top Spec conditioning flakes before which although he looked great on them, he turned into the horse from hell and I could barely handle him, let alone ride him.

Hi, i have a mare whos fit but lacks Oomph and i have been feeding her a scoop of bailieys endurance mix twice a day with a bit extra the day before a competition... shes an eventer and i can really feel the difference when shes been fed up! L x

Another vote for Power and Performance, really fab feed. I had mine on it all last winter and it was great. I switched to Staypower museli at the beginning of the season as i felt he needed more stamina that quick energy.

I'd give D&H helpline a call, they are really helpful and always give several options.

If the birds are eating bits out of his pooh I would say that there is a reason why the horse is not digesting his feed. Maybe you are feeding more than the recommended 4lb weight per feed or maybe his teeth need attention which is why his food is not being ground up when he eats.

One thing to note is that you will not change your horses temperment by feed either, so if he is a laid back chap anyway, then feeding him copious amounts of a high energy feed will do no good, just make him fat! Would oil added to his diet help at all? This is a good source of slow release energy which would possibly be more beneficial to your horse. The going off your leg problem will not improve by feeding your horse a) more feed, or b) higher energy feed as this is a schooling issue.

I absolutely swear by Power and Performance!!! It has been the making of J I swear!!! It gives him lots of energy but he's not been silly with it

My lazy event horse is on 16% racehorse cubes - it's the only feed that gives him enough energy and that he'll actually eat (he's very picky and won't touch outs or mix). He tends to be a bit spooky at the best of times, and the feed does accentuate it a bit but I still find it's the best solution

They can't digest the husks so they go straight through the horse, like us with sweetcorn

they can digest bruised, rolled or crushed oats

It has got my big old lump of a mare doing with out making her fat or going off her head.

She looks amazing at the moment and she seems to have put on more muscle aswell.

very happy with it. much better than tradition comp mixes etc. she can have a day off still get fed with out bucking me off the next time i get on her!

Have you seen there's a new supplement from NAF for helping with energy? Might be worth a try - especially as according to their website it's on special offer at the mo!
