What is the correct way to messure a horse for a bit...

Has no one answered you?
Ok, here goes, three methods, all need tape measure;
1. With a smooth stick (whip or something). Get friend to hold horse in headcollar, slide stick into mouth and mark the sides of his mouth with your fingers. Remove stick keeping your fingers in place, then measure distance between them. Add 1/2 to 1 inch to the size for lip space. So if you measure 4 3/4 inches, I'd say 5 1/2 inch bit.
2. Use string - secure horse as above and put string gently through his mouth where the bit would go, marking ends with thumbs. Measure string between as above.
3. Borrow a bit, try it in his mouth. With the bit straight, you should be able to pop the ends of your fingers at either side between the lips and the rings with ease (sliding your fingers til the bit is where you'd hold a cigarette, if that makes sense). If you can't get your fingers in - too narrow, if there is room for more than your fingers at each side - too wide.
Hope I haven't confused you!
