What is the most economical bedding for a stable?

I used Bliss. Very good at absorbing wet and smells. I did deep litter and easy to remove droppings and wet as arrived at the surface. Nice comfy bed and 'sits' better than shavings. Even with pony on box rest only used one bale a week.

Straw would be cheaper but in the long run with the danger of COPD maybe not.

Providing your horse doesn't eat it quicker than you top it up, with no rubber matting I don't think you will beat straw.

Chopped rape straw (e.g.Bliss) or hemp (e.g Megasorb) as a base with straw on top, and then semi deep litter, mucking out the straw layer daily and just removing wet patches from the base now and again. Saved me a fortune last year because I got the base bedding when it was on offer and big bale straw for around £30 which lasted several weeks for 3 boxes. Look for offers on the base bedding.
