What is the outlook for my rescued Shetland?

blimey the poor little lad was in a mess wasnt he, thank god you got him when you did. Do have any other horses? what are your plans for this chap?:)
 
He was awful.. It took us 20 mins to get him out of the allotment he was in. He was in there for 7 years according to his passport, with 8 foot metal fencing that he couldn't see out of and no company :(

I had sold up and was waiting for my daughters to grow up a little (they're 6 and 18mths) before I got another cobby type for us to share. Thankfully though, after I sold my riding mare in Oct '10, I kept the rent up for my stable / land which I rent from the council and kept it in a good state of repair. So I could move the little man straight in.. I found out about him because my auntie knew I had the land and saw the pony at the allotments in that state.

My daughters, and I, love him to bits. Our paddock is joined on to quite a few more that are occupied, and he's fallen in love with a minature shettie that he can see through the fence. What we can do with him all depends on how well he pulls through.. If he makes a full recovery (unlikely, I know), then I might look into a lightweight trap. He's strong as an ox! More than likely though, he'll just be a pampered pet - maybe the odd veteran class at local shows if my daughter has her way! But either way, he'll be with us now till the end :) I just hope that's a good 10 years away :)
 
thank goodness for people like you and your aunt who refused to look away. I hope you will post updates on this guy, whats his name?:)
 
Oh I will :) He's called Timmy. It's funny because his passport says he's 19, but both the vet and an experienced friend says that his teeth look more like 14ish. He's approx. 35 inches, and is a typical cheeky shettie - he's got a right nip on him!

I'm so glad I found this site cos you all seem really nice.. what horses do you have? :)

Timmy what a great name. Yes "most" of us are nice. I have an IDxfriesian. There are some really good feet people on here especially unshod feet but it depends when they log on wether they see your post x
 
i am so glad timmy has found someone to love him..i reckon you should get another wee one to keep with him so that he can have a bit of company in his aged years...if he was on his own for so long!!..poor wee timmy
i have a problem(thats what my hubby calls it) with rescueing animals..my latest is a rescue donkey that was found with twenty other jack donkeys..three dead and two half dead and magpies had pecked out their eyes and their bottoms, they were just too weak to do anything about it,

i cry every day about all the unwanted and neglected animals that i cant afford...i am like you, i can only afford so much..i am lucky because the local charity is going to pay for the donkey who i now call eugene to be castrated and microchipped..but thats only because i got him through the charity..i have also rescued severel thoroughbred horses that i had to sort out myself..and i could afford anything like xrays etc...

i have a laminitic pony , she was pretty bad when i got her a year ago , but i am lucky that my farrier is a master farrier and knew his stuff....she is only coming right noe after months of care.

good luck with timmy..he looks like a character
 
I don't have any advice to offer sorry but want to wish you the best of luck, lucky pony to have been found by you.

Stephanie - That story is just horrendeous. Poor little man! How anyone can do anything like that to animals is beyond me. How can they go home to warm beds and cooked dinners knowing that their animals are in that state?!

Am looking forward to some more photos mabe you can get some more over the weekend. Yes his feet are still long but you've performed miracle's (and the farrier) compared to the state they were first in, he looked like a welfare case (although I understand this is through ignorance rather than malice) x
 
The farrier really is fantastic.. He was so understandably dubious about trimming before xrays, but he's done a great job so far.

And I completely agree with the welfare case comment - the only reason I didn't call the RSPCA is because I could understand why the man had done what he had done, and even though he should have known better than to leave the pony how he was, he was genuinely concerned about him and was really remorseful when he realised the extent of his actions - i.e. that there is a real possibility he'll have to be pts.

His ex wife, however, was a bit of a b*tch, and actually had the nerve to ask whether i'd paid money for him, and if her ex was keeping it for himself! I explained that she was VERY lucky that I hadn't gone to the authorities, and if she didn't hand over the passport and sign him over to me then i'd have no choice but to get them involved. Funnily enough, as soon as she realised the severity of the case, she signed the passport over, along with a receipt for £1 so that there will be no come-back if I manage to get him healthy. The last thing I want is them saying he was just on loan!

I've told her daughter (who is still rather young), that if she wants to come and visit him she can. It's not her fault, and when she saw the pictures she cried and cried; apparently her mum hadn't let her see her dad or the pony for months, so she didn't know what was going on. I felt so sorry for her actually; she'd had him most of her life that she can remember, and I guess that she was one of the main reasons that I didn't want to have them prosecuted for the state he is in. When I think back to how much I loved my pony as a little girl, it just makes the entire mess all a bit more harrowing :(

Yes, thank god for nice people like you, bless him, bet he cannot believe his luck, hopefully he will come right, it is amazing how they can bounce back even after such bad neglect. Updates would be good :)
 
Just wanted to say what a wonderful person you are helping Timmy he a gorgeous wee boy and Im sure your hard work will pay off for you, and hope you have many years of enjoyment from him. I really hope he doesnt have cushings as suggested in your other thread. I think if vet thought he did then they would have suggested testing him by now. But it looks and sounds like he has come along way on his road to recovery. I hope to hear how you guys get on in the future and wish you all the best. x

I'm very touched by your compassion towards the people you got him from too. What a lovely person you seem to be. :)

Agggghhhh...this makes me want to spit... :mad: If people can't use a brain cell to consider their children's well being it's no shock that they have no interest in being responsible for an animal...

I'm glad the little fella is with you OI and my fingers are crossed for him... The kiddie will remember someone doing the right thing for her pony and hopefully she'll be able to visit...
 
If it's just the arthritis he's having buteless for i'd recommend buteless by equine america. My mare is 32 and lane without it. On it she's sound and well.

Spots - he's on it to help with the pain in his feet; his laminae have grown and are having to be trimmed back with his hoof wall. Do you think it would help with the pain of laminitis?

Not sure about this, may be worth a new thread in vetinary, how is TIMMY today? Any new pics? :D
 
Just posted an update on other thread - he's still limping but seemed to like a few hours of attention today :)

Pics will be uploaded in morning from today as i'm shattered - i'm not used to this much fresh air in the past couple of years ;) He had a BIG brush, and to be honest, it didn't really make that much difference as he's malting *doh!* lol :)

Brill look forward to the pics, yes I know what you mean about the malting could have stuffed a pillow with my boys shedded fur today x
