What is the outlook for my rescued Shettie?

Another dinky muzzle fan!!

As for clipping - I would probably leave him- if he is warmer he is more Lilkely to shed - cushings permitted. My mini has a little trace clip and just gets attacked regularily with a metal shedding blade

I've just posted a HUGE update and it's deleted it! Grrr...

Anyways, thanks for your advice. I've ordered a dinky one, along with a honeycomb cooler and a lightweight turnout as we clipped him today. He really was struggling with the heat, and looks like a different pony!

Bad news is, he's limping worse today :( I know it won't get better overnight but I don't understand his relapse. He's on 1/2 bute a day, pergolide, magnesium oxide, brewer's yeast, a shavings bed, no turnout (but a stable which was actually built for a cleveland bay so plenty of room to walk around) and a strictly no sugar diet (bar the slice of apple I hide his tablet in). I soak his feet twice a day, and his hay overnight with fresh water.

There's really nothing more I can do. I know i've only had him 6 weeks, and the transformation with 3 trims to his feet has been amazing. I just hate to still see him in pain :(

Gonna see what the vet says if he's still badly limping tomorrow. Bet she's sick of hearing my voice!

Hang in there, his foot has had a lot of change...
Maybe ask the vet if you can up the Bute dose in the short term until he's comfortable, and try and keep him in his stable, even when mucking him out until it all settles down. Also make sure the shavings bed goes right to his door.
I'm like you in that I'm going to have to clip mine at the weekend, but I'm loathed to take it all off as it's so cold at night..... Decisions decisions.
He really is such a lucky pony to have found you, hes probably going to have you on a bit of a roller coaster in the short term, but I'm sure you'll get him sorted and comfortable in the long run x

Yeah - I thought of maybe upping it to one sachet. Gonna pick up a few more bales of shavings too and make his bed a little deeper - Like you said it's no good if he doesn't stand on it lol.

I really, really hope he'll be ok. He's a cutie (even if he does look a bit dodgy with no fur :) )

Not sure how much your vet is charging for Pergolide but my vet writes me a prescription and I get mine through Tesco Pharmacy because it was less than half the price than the vet could supply it (vet was charging £159.70 for 100 X 1mg tablets, Tesco are £66.90 for the same + £12.10 for the prescription).
Just a thought, they do have to write you a prescription for the medication if you ask for it (my vet offered it to me because of the cost of pergolide).
Tesco was the cheapest I found it, but even Boots & Lloyds pharmacy were cheaper so worth shopping about for a cheaper option.

You may find that some easyboots (hoofboots) may support him. I have a laminitic midi shetland and he is happier in his boots when he's had the farrier. Easyboots are available in 000 and 00 sizing especially for the smaller feet. Obviously he doesn'e wear them all the time as they can rub.

Well done in rescuing this lovely shetland....

Hi :)

Sorry i've not been on in ages.. I've been so busy!!!!

Timmy is doing great :D He must have been having an 'off' day before, because he's not limping at all now. Maybe it's because the pregolide has kicked in... I don't know. He can now be turned out for a little bit at a time, with his grazing muzzle on. He seems to limp much less when he gets out, so maybe the arthritis was giving him problems too.

Also, he now has company in the form of a GORGEOUS cob mare I bought on sunday :) She's taken to him really well, and they're getting on great and sharing a stable brilliantly.

He has more blood tests booked in 2 weeks (i'm going to get my new mare checked over and vaccinated too etc at the same time). Hopefully they'll show that his cushings is under control too :)
