Oh, and one time I found 2 retrievers that belonged to a well-known TV gardener in my trough, being washed off by his wife after a muddy walk

Not horsey, but I found a shrew floating in my dog's water bowl last Saturday. He that chases any small, moving object had left it well alone and was sitting in the corner of the run looking quite disturbed.

A squirrel, and on the same day in another trough, a kitten. Poor things I felt quite sad thinking about them struggling to stay afloat and then giving up with exhaustion. Ghastly way to go.

Now I leave a short bit of planking in all my troughs, the birds use them as diving boards and as I haven't had any more drowned creatures hopefully they have saved a life or two.

The oddest thing would be a 10" snapping turtle though. I suspect my daughter found it and put it in there as I can't see how it would climb into a water tub.

Good Lord, if someone did that to my trough there would be war!

Never found anything weird in my horses trough. Have found the odd dead mouse in the bottom of feed bins though (having gorged themselves I guess) - the worst being those who have got into the sugar beet bin... they swell pretty badly... gross.

Use a trug for the pony when it's visiting cos it's the same colour as the water bins at home field (pony ignores water trough under tap). However pony often prefers to drink from the (much smaller) metal dog bowl we keep outside the back door - I think cos she is nosey and wants to stick her nose indoors she tends to hang about near the back door, so one has to keep refilling this. Dog prefers to drink the water in the bird bath, and the crows like to drink from the big water trough under the tap down the field. Last time we emptied the water trough we found lots of bricks. Daughter confessed she and friend put them in to make the trough overflow. Often find frogs in the dog bowl.
