About the length of a long lead rope. Not very technical! If the reins are too long there is a danger the horse can turn and get himself tied up - seen it done.

My barn aisle is 15' and although I CAN cross tie on it I don't because, as Orangehorse says they just have too much rope.

I could cross tie much better in the stalls, they are 10' wide, but I NEVER do anything with horses in their stalls, if I want to groom, tack up, etc, etc it all happens on the aisle, so they just have one rope looped through whatever is available.

Toffee, yes, that's it. A rope from either side of the noseband.

The only time I really use it is when travelling to prevent horses trying to turn.

Thanks guys.
I'm having a 10 ft veranda put along the front of stables and am thinking I can cross tie between veranda post and stable wall, prob will only use for clipping, washing down, plaiting etc.... but didn't want it to be too far apart!!
