What Is This Bit?

Hello, stupid question!

What is this? (It's not a Swales, I promise!) http://www.rideaway.co.uk/korsteel-wire-tongue-grid/default.aspx

I guess it's the stop the horse getting it's tongue over the bit, but I've never seen one! How is it fitted?

Could some kind person enlightened me

Oooh, never seen that before! I agree, maybe to stop getting tongue over the bit and possibly to work only on the corners of the lips? I may be being a total numpty though

I think it used to be used on racehorses and i think it would be used in addition to a bit so would need the type of headpiece used on a double bridle. I maybe completely wrong though.

You guessed it's use in one.
It's fitted onto a slip head and used alongside a snaffle which you actually ride on, so the grid just sits in the mouth, no reins attached to it.
