Last summer my gelding got some very itchy lumps on his sides which were never identified but over winter he has developed tufts of darker longer hair around the sides of his stomach area. The skin is very scurfy and the longer hair is now falling out leaving bare skin and some bare patches have got a red circular area in the centre. It's not raw or bleeding, just red skin.
Last year I suspected bot flies emerging as some of the lumps had small scabs which pulled off with a tuft of hair. The lumps have gone down mostly except one has started to come up again.
Everyone I have asked, even those who have been around horses all their lives have not seen anything like this, can anyone tell me what they are???

The hair falling out with skin attached is typical of rain scald. I would think there is some sort of fungal, yeast or bacterial skin infection. It might be worth a scrape to check. He' is very scurfy as you say so skin in not the greatest condition.
Do you feed brewers yeast by any chance? If you do has the scurfyness coincided with starting it? I know of a horse who became very scurfy on BY which cleared when he was taken off it.

Unusual site unless the scurfyness is all over but crawlies is something else to discount.

I don't think he's been sweating, no dried wavy hair.
Not convinced it's an allergy as the area's are isolated, not all over his body. Not been using any products, only same coat shine I've used for years and not in that area, only on his tail, and this problem is only on one side??
He is very scurfy in that area and only a bit scurfy elsewhere, as is usual from wearing rugs all winter.
He has been fed Fibre Digester which is a yeast, would that be the same as BY?
I scrutinised the area today but couldn't see any crawlies, I did suspect that though.

Hi muff747. My two cobs had exactly the same thing as yours and in the same place, on their sides and tummies but nowhere else. They haven't seemed itchy or sore and never had them before.Kelsi's hair has come out in patches as well. Both horses are clipped and I thought it maybe their coats changing but it doesn't look like your horse is clipped. I washed them in Dermoline and it has gone away, but that could just be a coincidence. No idea what it is and have owned horses for 30 years and never seen it before.
