Last summer my gelding got some very itchy lumps on his sides which were never identified but over winter he has developed tufts of darker longer hair around the sides of his stomach area. The skin is very scurfy and the longer hair is now falling out leaving bare skin and some bare patches have got a red circular area in the centre. It's not raw or bleeding, just red skin.
Last year I suspected bot flies emerging as some of the lumps had small scabs which pulled off with a tuft of hair. The lumps have gone down mostly except one has started to come up again.
Everyone I have asked, even those who have been around horses all their lives have not seen anything like this, can anyone tell me what they are???
