My mother in law wants a rug she used to have for her old horse, she says it was warm but lightweight one that could be used in the stable ANd outdoors (i.e. waterproof), with hidden belly straps and it was dark green. I know this is really vague but I wanted to try and get something in Robinsons sale (which I have had 100 emails about so it better be good!!), is there a dual purpose rug, what are they called?

It sounds like a chaskit rug (you could attach linings to them) they had what they called spider straps that attached through the front legs up to a ring attached to the side of rug and then to between the back legs. Not sure they are still trading and they were very expensive going back 15 years a go

Yeah, and when one livery with more money than sense buys one a whole flippin yard buy them! Oh the joys of rugging up ernomous horses when you are only 5ft2!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If it was a chaskit... (although i would never have called them lightweight), then you could have a hard time.

If i remember rightly, Thermatex sold Chaskit to another company and i have this niddling feeling it was a US company.

They were nice rugs, albeit heavy and could be fiddly for people who didnt know the spider fastening system.

They were sort of like an older fashioned Rambo Duo... with the detachable neck and liners.

They were also very very expensive. Im sure we paid close to £300 for mine.

Im 99% we paid about £280 for the turnout and a detachable neck. The liners were extra and we didnt bother as we wanted to see what the rug was like first.

They were a really heavy canvas type material like the older NZ rugs.. which is why im not 100% sure its the same thing.

That being said they were very very good. No slips, no leaks, and so so durable.

Chaskits are brilliant rugs. I bought one about 12 years ago now and its only JUST looking a bit worn and needing to get fixed as both spiders I have for it broke

They are excellent rugs - because of the spider, they dont slip at all. They're very very waterproof (mine has never leaked) yet they are very lightweight. I absolutely love mine and would have bought more for my other horses but they are pretty rare and very expensive!

I *think* this is them in the UK: http://www.equineaffairs.com/SupplierDetails.asp?SupplierID=81&CategoryID=6

My friend has had them for years and yes she isl oaded! She bought a new one last year as the other one she had years was getting tatty,i wouldn't have one as they are a pain, they slip a lot i find.If your into old fashion rugs then they are good but i'd rather spend my money on a rambo or Fal personally.

They were very good value for money in that they lasted for ever - though still none of us paupers could afford one!

A local lady round our way made some very similar, and my new horse came with one. Very robust it was.

Personally though, I don't like the spiders. Not safe to put rugs on spooky horses in high winds as if it gets away from you, there's possibly 2 parts of the spider that you still haven't clipped on , that are now dangling all over the place.

Plus two of mine used to get their hind legs caught in their spider, presumably when they kicked flies off their belly. OK, not the Chaskit rug, but cheaper versions sold that have the same 'do up' arrangement.
