I think I must have the most accident prone horse in the world :(

Phoned + left a message for the vet, but does anyone here know what this is? I've not seen it before.

You can see it from the side too...

Cheers.

A reaction to a fly bite? this happened to a horse i had years ago, it got quite huge and then slowly went down in size and dissapeared, think it took nearly a week for it to go completely.

Looks like a reaction to midge bites to me, especially if there are little bits of black on the skin in the same area as this is dried blood.

Use a thick barrier cream so the flies cant reach the skin

Oberon - Thanks :). You may be right about it being a hernia :(

You can't tell from the photo, but its quite squishy, not hard like a fly bite. Doesn't seem to hurt when touched, either.

Here's another pic (not great quality, sorry)

Does he suffer with sarcoids? my old boy had one come up in just the same place, it was blind so stayed under the skin until (beware-this bit is quite gross) the skin got too tight and split. The vet told me to leave it alone and within a few days the sarcoid had come out and the wound closed up, its a possibility.

Id have thought a hernia would be painful?

It could still be some sort of odema from a fly bite or some other irritation, it doesnt have to be hard.

I hope poor horsey is ok whatever it is! :o

When I was doing some work experience with my vet I saw quite a lot of this. It could be your horse has been bitten or slightly irritated and for some reason it has caused a bit of odaema that obviously can't escape and the fluid collects around that area :)

It may not be but that is what this vet put it down to. Usually its some antibiotics and it will go down. Hope it is anything worse and it gets sorted :)

I would put money on it being a reaction to a fly bite. If you cover it with Sudocrem in a couple of days it will go down. My horse gets this regularly.

Duh sorry, I meant hope that it ISN'T anything worse :)

Yes it should go down by itself in a few days if it is a reaction to a bite or irritation. However if you are worried and your vet is coming out then a dose of antibiotics should do the trick. Unless they tell you to leave it too.

My veteran gelding had a swelling like this along with a swollen sheath due to fly bites. I make sure I use a thicker fly repellent cream round that area and along the hair line in the centre of his tummy. He did need a/b's and bute to help things along but he's 29 and prone to fluid collecting around his sheath anyway.

 Doesn't suffer from sarcoids atm, but hope that's not changing!

Perhaps it is a fly bite then, but it seems an odd shape + sort of joined onto his sheath, but maybe that's the fluid. I'll see what the vet says; thanks guys :)
