Following on from a comment in Moralcampaigner's (tongue in cheek as I read it) thread.

I am completely disgusted by you all, what sort of mentality is this?
Call yourselves horse lovers! You don't know what that means!
Shame on you all

So what IS a horse lover?

One who buys wonky horses from Franch

Oooo I'm going to have to think on that one..... How to sum it up?

Um,

Someone whose only thought is for the wellbeing and happiness of their horse.

Someone for whom just the smell of a horse bring joy.

Someone for whom the site of something so beautiful stirs the heart.

Someone for whom just sitting on top of a horse on top of a mountain brings them to tears.............

Havnt read that thread, will do it in a minute.
But my idea of a horse lover is someone who unconditionally puts their horse and its welfare first, above everything else. That includes putting the horse first even if it means inconvenience, financial loss, heartache, stress or hassle to the owner. IMO many people say they love horses but when it comes down to it they are not selfless enough to give the horse what it really needs. Horses often have to compromise because of their owners, when they really shouldnt have to.

I so, so agree with this!

Ditto all the above.....

....someone who puts their horses welfare above cost/hassle...
....someone who retires their beloved horse and gives them the same consideration and care as their still active animals....
....someone who looks for reasons why.....and tries to sort them out
...someone who is happy to hot compress their pony until the pus comes pouring out of their nose when it has strangles, but would vomit if their child wiped snot on them

.....there is another definition of horse-lover....but I doubt thats what you mean

Ditto teddyt, well said. As the owner of an elderley horse I would say that making the right decision in terms of PTS comes to mind when thinking of a 'horse lover'. I see too many horses that are kept alive for their owner's sake rather than a dignified PTS when they are still happy and comfortable.

Very ditto that, too.....

I actually have absolutely no idea what a "horse lover" is - I just know that I am not one.

I like my horses, I give them all the care they need, I am fully responsible for them and endeavour to make their lives as natural and comfortable as possible within the constraints of modern day living. I treat them as horses, I show respect for them, I enjoy spending time with them BUT I could live without them, and perhaps that is the difference between someone who likes some horses and someone who loves all horses without singling any out? There are definitely some horses I like better than others - I can be quite picky about horses (not based on looks but on mannerisms and characters).

I certainly love one of my horses, actually she's not my horse and she's not a horse, she's my daughter's little pony; but that simply means I just love her (as I have loved 1 other horse in my life), and in a way which is not anything to do with her being an equine, that's just coincidental.
