Hi all,

I am going to enter my first ridden Hunter show in about 24 years on sunday and i am soooo nervous lol

I have only had my ID for about 3 months now but want to show him off and i think a local hunter class would be perfect for him but i am so out of touch!

What do people do now for their individual show when called out??

Have attached a pic of my boy. He is 16hh middleweight ID

Any hunter worth it's salt MUST be able to show a balanced and controlled gallop - make this your party piece! Good luck, your horse is lovely and should do very well!

Same as above diagram, but gallop on the left rein usually :)

Gallop is the key though and what it normally comes down to if it's a close call in placings - who had the better gallop.

Just a suggestion also, as he's quite a chunky lad, he'd look much more refined and suited in a chunkier bridle, and when you plait him, set the plaits up slightly higher to give him more of a top, it'd really change his appearance to the eye. :) He's lovely though!

Good luck! :D

:D

I would try to make your gallop a bit longer in relation to the rest of the show than the diagram. Try to gallop uphill if possible - certainly NOT downhill - to show your horse to his best advantage.

And I hope you don't mind my saying, remember to say 'good morning/afternoon' to the judge when you come out of the line-up and 'thank you' at the end of your show.

nice horse! turnout is paramount so ditch the white numnah get a brown one which fits your saddle! and remember to go forwards and gallop! go watch a couple of county hunter classes..

Usually figure of 8 show finishing off on long side with a gallop. Good luck, lovely horse although I do have a soft spot for IDs. Good luck not that you'll need it.

will i stop and be seen by the judge before i do my show or will i just come out and start straight away??
Sorry but like i said its been a while lol

Gorgeous horse!

I like you have come back to showing this year after a long break. It's overwhelming!

I was all at sea this year remembering what to do but I was lucky enough to win a training session with the show producer Ella Souster at Ipswich in July which focussed on what to do in shows and how your individual show should appear.

It was a fantastic session (she is worth her weight in gold) and East Anglia Rider Magazine wrote an article on it which appears in the August edition (p14-15). Google it - it's an e-magazine. I am Rebecca and Sweep in that article fwiw. It focusses on does and don'ts for the showing ring written in a non-patronizing way, and is full of gems.

The main point that she elaborated on at the session (that was not mentioned in the article) was that for non affiliated classes make sure your show starts as always with a track right, but then stay on the right rein to do your first canter. Then go across diagonal to left rein, go into your second canter so that you can then show your gallop behind the line up on the 'safe' side (thus avoiding shrieking babies, OAPs opening umbrellas etc on the ring side.).

According to her it is only in affiliated classes that you do a show as described further up in this thread where you do your first change of rein in trot and then are obliged to do your gallop on the ringside which is far more hair raising in terms of potential hazards to spook at!

Good luck! You're not the only one! I am trying to do WH again after a 20 year break and 3 children. It's not easy......but it makes me feel like I am 16 again!

This is what I do in Hunter classes

but you need to tailor your show to your horses strengths.

this is fab, why have I never thought of this before? Could have saved me endless times 'trotting' and 'cantering' around the arena to show people how to do a show! Although I do mines slightly different its the same idea!

Cant really add anymore than anyone already has, your boys lovely and good luck :)

Some great advice, not always that simple, in local shows they don't always have the line up in a place where you can go behind the line up. So what a show before hand to see where judge puts the them
Also do be prepared that some judges will ask you to walk away and trot back towards them and then continue on with your show.
you should walk away turn by riding a 'key hole' shape to the right and then trot towards them

also smile, not a huge grin. keep and eye on the judge and try to make any adjustments out of her/his sight :D

most important ENJOY!!!

First thing to say is your boy is gorgeous, a heavier bridle with a thicker noseband will make his head more handsome. As for a show even at unaffiliated shows if you are to do your own show they like you to do the whole thing infront of the lineup for H&S reasons. Just be aware that even at grass roots level you may have a Ride Judge, so make sure your stirrups and leathers are suitable for a tall person with big feet.

lol small world.
yes SEEDRC. sad thing is i have watched my friends show there for years as i only showjumped my lsast horse but i am totally blank....nerves i guess!
