considering trying a different routine at the weekends. currently go up about 9am, have a few to turn out, ride, muck out/lift beds go home and shower. have couple of hours or so at home then back to yard about 3pm ish to bring in/feed/rugs etc etc and gen faff about, then home and shower again. its fine but really breaks up the day and doesn't flow very well. so was thinking of trying going up bit later, like 10am ride and turn out. then do all my mucking out, faffing, haying others, sweeping etc then bringing in and putting to bed for evening, then aiming to be home at 3ish. thats me done for the day. only downside is there turnout will be reduced by about 1-2hours and will need extra hay, but with the weather being pretty wet donnt think they'd mind too much, plus they are out every week day 7-4pm. what do you think? what do you do? sorry, pretty randon pointless post!

sounds fine to me, so long as they get enough hay and arnt the type to get stroppy if breakfast is 5 minutes late then give it a try

I can see why you might want to start later it would save on travel, but I wouldn't want to get to mine at 10, as it would take me even longer to muck out.

I'm afraid, weekends dont mean lie-ins for me. It's my choice and I'd rather have the break in the middle to pop to town or clean the house.

Up to yard for about 8.30... muck out and ride and turn out... get everything ready for the evening so I just have to bring in at night.... home for about 11... But i don't bring in til between 4 and 5 unless the weather is shockingly bad... and i can still do stuff in the evenings cos i only have to literally bring in at night... works ok for me... but if i have a vv busy weekend mum brings in at night...

I only have one so not to bad!! On yard about 7, feed, turn out, muck out. Might then ride. Go home, which is 50 meters from stable!! In afternoon if havn;t ridden in morn, will ride, groom and put in stable with hay. Will then go back out about 6.30 to give feed skip out and more hay.

thats my problem i think, cant ever seem to just pop up to bring them in, always find something else to do, tho i have 3 to do. dont mind getting up early as i do now but just never seem to finish any earlier!

could be ok if someone else is giving them breakfast early and dinner 5/6 ish! otherwise its a long night and short day for the horses! personally i feed around the same time give or take 15 mins every day. and the beds will be shitty if left til 10 am (more work and more bedding!)

my routine, they are at my mums which helps!

saturday
they are fed at 8
go down for 9/9.30 ride for 2 hours
do proper muck out, muck heap, skip field etc
home and shower about 12.30/1pm.

horses stay out till dark so 4.30-5pm bring in change rugs, feed. Done in half and hour unless they are filthy!

Sunday
takes less time as only skip out as deep litter through the week so home by about 12 ish unless going for lesson or similar.

Pah couldnt be doing with 2 showers either

I do think that would be a short day out for the horses, like ours to be out as much as possible.

on my days off work sunday plus one other day on a rota basis, i go up to horse for 7am and usually finished and home for 9am
go home and if really tired i go back to bed till 12ish get up wash car, do my washing cleaning etc, back up to horse for 3.30pm give him a really good groom and fuss etc he just a baby so no riding. poop scoop fields prepare feeds, and hay ,water etc home by 5pm and chill

Arrive yard 6.30am - its usually 5.30am in the week - feed 25 horses - turn out my 3 - go back home to bed.

Get to yard approx 12pm - do a proper muck out on all beds, ride 2 horses and long rein 1, do as much as i can for the week ahead i.e feeds, hay nets etc. Finish jobs at 6ish and feed and leave about 6.30pm

I don't have Ellie on a saturday but on a Sunday I do. For me the routine is:
Down by 8.30/9
turn out
muck out Ellie's stable (and gossip)
catch up with horsey friends and halfheartedly pretend to finish yard jobs
ride for 1 to 2 hours with aforementioned friends and chatter
put ponies back out
home by 12ish

She then stays out till about 5ish

I'm puzzled why anyone would give evening feed at 3pm?

Horses need to "drip feed" to keep their hindguts working, and if fed at 3pm, with maybe a couple of hours worth of hay it means they are potentially without anything to eat for 15 hours from 5pm until 7am or 8am, which is surely too long - not so bad if they can nibble at a straw bed (not that you would really want them to do that) but if they are on shavings etc I think it's actually quite cruel. Plus I wouldn't like my tea at 3pm....my God I'd be starving by 7o'clock!!!
