What jobs do you do...and how do you fit horses in to your working day?

I'm currently on maternity leave with a 7 month old baby, so starting to think about the inevitable return to work. I'm interested in hearing how you working parents manage to ride and work and look after your children - how do you fit it all in?!!

I have two mares, (who incidentally are stabled at the mo due to one having an abscess and the other keeping her company) who normally live out in the paddocks outside our house (we're building stables in time for winter).

I have only now really got a good routine going in that baby and I get up at 7am for breakfast, get dressed and out in the buggy by 8.30 to see the horses (they are about 100m down the road on my husband's parents' farm, currently in bull pens!), feed, haynets and muck out - we're usually done by 10 ish, by which time baby is napping. If I need to have a shower and make up etc this all has to be done before 7am.

During the day I try to get housework done, (I am hoping to work from home a bit so aim tofit this in this chunk of time) and shopping, go in to town etc.

In the evening, if my husband is working late, I either take the baby in the buggy again at about 6pm, after she's had her supper (we start baby bedtime routine at 7pm) and repeat the horse feeding routine. If my husband is back earlier, I'll do the horses after the baby has gone to bed at 7.30pm.

Bearing in mind the horses aren't actually being ridden at the moment, I am trying to sort out going back to work part time but also once my youngster has recovered from her abscess, bring her back in to work and I'm a little worried about how I'm going to keep some sort of balance. It will be easier when the horses are stabled on the doorstep, that's for certain.

How do you do it?!!

Im lucky as I am a care assistant and have flexible hours, so I usually only work evenings. My OH works days until 5. I have 2 children so when Ive dropped them at school, about 9, I have the day free to spend up the yard or riding. It is difficult to juggle but as I said I'm lucky to work evenings. The only problem is summer hols when I have kids at home so cant ride as much as it means getting someone to babysit!

I'm a Forensic community Nurse, and also have to cover on call at our local Police stations quite early which means very early starts in winter.Cannot always predict my day as i never know what referrals may come my way for assessment.Tricky ones can take ages and i can be late getting back to the yard.Youngest child is now 17 so things on the child front are easy now, compared to a few years ago.Find it hard to ride during the week in winter so have to wait until the weekend.
