what kind of rugs are you putting on your horse at night at the moment

The little uns who are old are out in HW with fleeces on, and those feeling the cold are bought in, The bigguns are out in Lw/MW with/without fleeces, depending on size and amount of hair :)

Hi

None of my seven horses from foal to 23 year old and trace clipped cob ever wear rugs. I do believe it is a big conspiracy by the rug companies to make us believe horses need rugs when they do not. All but the cob live out including through all the snow and they are all fine. I just feed them well.
It is much easier not having numerous wet rugs to dry and they control their own temperatures much better than me having to get rugs on and off on a warm day.

Fully clipped about 6 weeks ago

Night
LW Stable rug
Combo under rug
HW Stable rug
I added an neck cover tonight as well as it's supposed to go down to -9

Day -if in
LW Stable
Combo
Day - if out
LW Stable
MW NZ with neck

It varies all the time tho depending on the temperature/weather etc

Surely you would not put a fully clipped TB out without a rug? Horses that are clipped needs rugs especially if it is very cold.

My TB is a rather 'cold' horse and seems to need lots of rugs to keep him warm. He's out 24/7 with low trace clip and it got down to -13 where we are the other night. Was warm as toast with a fleece, MW under rug and HW turnout! (All combo). I'm giving him a mountain of feed twice daily, and in the snow hayed at night (I would like to hay more but not really possible with yard etc).

Many of the liveries think I'm bonkers leaving him out, he also is prone to mud fever!! :D

EDIT- Surely it's a good thing if turnouts are frozen on the horses, as it means that their body heat is not escaping and causing the ice on the rug to melt?? :)

My pony isnt the biggest fan of being rugged, but he hates being cold, so he is in a duvet a fleece and a heavy weight neck cover at night...probably a bit excessive but he sulks if he is cold!!

mine are out and unrugged but have access to the stable if they want shelter (they never do though). I have put HW with necks on them last night when it was -13 and blizzarding - they were sweating this morning so are naked again. My horses are HARD!!!

Mine has thermatex fleece on with HW half neck stable rug... Temps are -10 at the moment and he's had a full clip but it's growing back quite thickly now. He's nice and snug :D

my old lad (fulled clipped TB type) has

hw under rug
newmarket fleece
hw stable rug

in the day i have been swapping the top layer and pulling the rugs forward but not removing the completely and he has no rubbed shoulders etc.

Out 24/7 in a Rambo wug.

If he wasn't so playful and covers himself with scratches everywhere he would be defending the elements with his own fur.

My horse goes out in a MW with neck and another without a neck on top. At night he has a fleece underneath the same MW with neck. He is a TB with a high trace clip and he does feel the cold. His stables are very nice though and keep them warm in the winter and cool in the summer.

I have 2 living out with no rugs on although my mare who lives out is coming back into work after new year so will have a lightweight on to keep her dry.

At the moment the night time temps are rarly above -10, mine is in a lycra vest, LW stable rug no neck (with a belly flap), LW stable rug no neck, and a high neck HW stable rug. he is very toasty, he keeps them on when he has his hour turnout with just his summer sheet with neck ontop so he doesnt get wet. He is toasty warm and as he keeps them on he doesnt get cold with rug chnages. He has the summer sheet ontop if it gets v cold or if it starts dripping into stable. I pull rugs forward everyday and no rubbing anywhere.
My two loanies are in naked at night inside barn very warm, and out in HW no necks.

a heavyweight full neck rambo rug. think its about 340g. I did try the layering thing but i find unless you buy proper underblankets (and use fleeces etc instead) they slip backwards and cause ALOT of extra pressure on the withers

Mine are fully clipped and in, at the mo they are wearing heavyweight fleece rugs which are part quilted, (they normally wear a lighter under rug when it's not sub-zero!), a Mark Todd under duvet and one has a heavyweight JHL stable rug with neck, and the other has a Mark Todd Heavy weight stable with separate neck cover. Normally their top stable rugs are a weatherbeeta with no neck, as they wear their under duvets anyway.

Yesterday I drove through the middle of one of the biggest TB studs in the uk.

It was lovely to see all the mares and youngsters turned out despite there being 8" of snow and it being -6 during the day.

The majority of these are unrugged.

There must be millions of pounds worth of horses in those paddocks (both those already born and the unborn foals)

Mines a full clipped Trakehner wimp and he is wearing:

Night
HW no neck stable
HW with neck stable
HW t/o with neck

day turned out

LW stable rug no neck
HW T/o with neck

Perfect for him anymore or anyless he starts to drop off weight

thats what i see
my dad says i am being lazy in not changing his rug, i said if i had a stabel rug with a hood i would change it
but i dont want him to get a cold neck he is only 5 if he gets to cold it will mean he is stiff, and he is also always in a bad mood in the mornigns to turn out if he has not had the neck cover on coincidence i think not

EH? did all horses die if exposure before the invention of "hoods" then?
A young horse is far more capable of keeping itself warm than an older one, if the cold weather is making your 5 year old horses neck stiff I suggest there is an underlying problem.

My share horse currently stays in his turnout, as it is one of those multi purpose jobbies..... but he has the neck taken OFF at night.

My 16.3 5yo blanket type clipped horse has a 300g rug in the day and 340g (I think) at night and she is nice and warm, these are the heaviest rug she'll wear as they keep her cosy even when it's -6 at 4pm (god knows what it was like in the middle of the night).

I've got one (7yo unclipped warmblood, thin coat) in a MW stable rug with LW turnout over - wears this whether in the stable or in the field.

One (25yo 7/8 TB unclipped thick coat) in either a LW turnout or naked, depending on conditions. Because she is ancient she wears a neck cover if it is sleeting or blizzarding to make me feel better but I doubt she actually needs it.

One (12yo Connie X) is totally naked whatever the weather - she hates rugs with a vengeance and is a much nicer pony to deal with without them!

I do think us wrinklies are less worried about neck covers as we remember the days before they even existed and all the horses survived! Can see nothing wrong with wearing a turnout in the stable either, though. Just do what is best for your own individual horse and check whether he is too cold or too warm and adjust accordingly.

PS: Ask your dad whether he thinks I'm lazy too! :p

Ours live out 24/7 and have a range of different rugs the lowest being 100g and the highest 200g. They are all good doers with lots of hay and are doing fine.
