Hi, Please can you tell me what type of livery yard you are on and if anyone is on a DIY only yard when do you see the YO etc.
Thanks :):)

Hi
My guys are on 2 separate yards both DIY.

One lives on a farm and I almost never see the farmer, I just put what I owe in an envelope through the door once a month, including hay in winter. He's not interested in having any problems and he leaves us to do as we please so I am not interested in giving him any! We do little repairs and maintainance jobs ourselves and have been known to round up stray sheep now and then.

The other lives on a proper livery yard which is on a large farm (but separate from it) I only ever see the owner of the place very occasionally to say hello to. There is a yard manager who collects rent, does repairs, makes big decisions etc but he also works full time so often weeks can go buy without really seeing him, but it is nice not to have to worry about repairs, hay, straw, fencing like I have to at the farm

My mare is on a DIY yard with an outdoor school about 5-10 minutes away from me at the moment, but when we get the new boy delivered on Saturday she will be coming with him to two stables with a field which are about a twenty second walk from my front door - I can't wait!! I'm getting fed up of all the 'politics' and back-stabbing that goes on at the yard I'm on, so can't wait to move.

I'm on yard (farm type) that offers DIY and full, although the full only kicks in during the winter months, very laid back, basically you just see to your own horses and chip in and help others if need be, no rules as such, you just speak to the YO if you have any probs, he lets you get on with your own stuff, he's not the sort that would put up with people that pester him though.

You'd either love or hate it basically.

I have my 3 on DIY, 1 stabled over winter and 2 live out all year round. There's an indoor and outdoor school. It's quite a big yard with around 80 horses, although it really doesn't feel that big. The yard owner lives on site and 2 of their children have horses on the yard/ See them every few days and there very friendly :)

Mine are both on an "assisted diy yard" with less of the assistance! Its good for me one lives out 24/7 the other is stabled at night.
Its so far from being the best yard its untrue. If i stop to think of its drawbacks they probably out weigh the good points but i still like it, i get on with everyone and the y/o is there daily at the very least twice a day as they have their own horses there to look after.

2 on DIY - Yard Owner lives on site, does not have horses. Yard Manager there from 9am-3pm Monday - Friday, i usually see her at weekends sometimes as she has her own horses there.

DIY
small private yard at someones home, so the yard owner is always around but I only see her if she pops out for a chat or is doing her own horses.

A cra* on at present (moving at the end of the month) with rubbish grazing, no electricity, no constant running water supply and a couple of chavs running it...

Roll on the 30th

I kept my boy at a large riding school, there was about 60-70 stables and an indoor and outdoor arena. I was on DIY but was actually quite difficult to find somewere to ride as there was either lessons on or lights wouldnt work or the outdoor was flooded/to hard, indoor got watered sometimes so to slippery or to hard!!! It was a right pain in the butt at times, the only reason i stayed was because there was all year turnout!! Oh forgot .. yard owner lives on site :)

My two boys are kept on Part Livery at a Large yard which offers Part/Full Livery only. I see the YO most days when I am at the yard but the Yard Manager is in charge of running the yard and looking after the horses and I see her everyday.

We also have a little retired pony who is kept at a DIY/Grass Livery yard. She has her own field and field shelter which she shares with one other pony. We see the YO most days but as the yard is quite small and is just DIY she isn't always there.

im at a livery yard/riding school and just now i am looking to move. everyone at the yard except me is on full livery and as its a riding school sometimes having somewhere to ride is difficult. plus we only have restricted turnout and the arena floods really bad and indoor arena is tiny with poles down the middle as it is two old barns joined together and its very very dusty! :( i want to move! only came here in the first place as is less than a mile from my house after we had moved but i am thinking i will have to travel further for somwhere nicer! hate moving horse its more stressful than moving house!!!

I am on a small livery yard (6 liveries) YO lives on site. I see her every morning when I muck out and most evenings and weekends we ride out together. She has become a good friend and is very helpful to all of us. If we are going out she will bring in/feed/put jim jams on if needed and she also will do holiday cover as well. She charges of course but my horse is always done perfectly :D I'm very lucky

I'm on a completely DIY yard which is part of a farm, but the farmer generally just seems to let us get on with it as long as we only use the fields he allows us to use and don't put the horses out with his sheep. There is no help whatsoever so if you can't get there then it's tough 54!t.

I'm on a DIY/assisted DIY yard. I pay £150 a month and YO turns out my horse in the morning 7days a week, occasionally brings in early afternoon if weather is bad. Gives haynets and feed. My YO lives onsite and is really great considering she only started being a YO a few months ago. She treats everyones horse as if it was her own and checks on them often.

YO always comes round for a chat about things pretty much everyday too. :)

On a fantastic assisted DIY yard. YO lives on site and we have 24/7 access. She's always there if a horse has a problem and if we need her we just have to knock at the house door day or night.
When my mare was due to foal the birth alarm had her tel number as first person to call!
She has 2 yards, 1 within 100 metres of the other much much smaller (only 8 horses) but with a lot more turnout. We are hoping to move there shortly and it will be like having my own place but without the worry of having to sort out straw, hay etc.

Small private yard (5 stables, but about 20 acres of grazing) at someone's house which I rent as a whole and my friend is my livery in 2 of the stables. The YO lives on site but is a retired farmer and doesn't know that much about horses so we are left to care for them completely on our own - if we don't get there, they don't get fed! He's lovely, but as others have said, he doesn't want any hassle. I pay first of the month by standing order, we do most of the maintenance ourselves, however he does roll and spray the fields every year. We've been there 3 years now, he's let us have a cat and some hens, and although he lives there, I think we spend more time there than he does and only see him about once a week to wave to on the way in or out. It's my second home and my place to relax :-)

Small private yard.

Full Board only.

YO (that would be me then) may be in the barn doing own horses, or in the house if needed, but gives Boarders plenty of space to do their own thing and doesn't intrude.

We are on a small DIY yard and see YO's several times a week if not daily at the yard but often outside the yard too as we have been good friends for over 30 years and socialise when we get chance.

Odd question from a livery yard owner?? I keep my horse at home but when I was on a yard I only went on yards where the owner lived on site.

I am thinking of taking over another yard where the owners live on now but they no longer want to run it. So I am considering renting the yard but obviously will not be there 24/7 like I am here. Just thought I would see how other people cope without a yard owner around all the time and see if was possible to make it work. :)
Thanks everyone for helping me :):)
