What logic/reasoning do you use when choosing show names?

I'm interested in how people go about chosing show names for their horse - do you base it on personality? Their everyday name or do you use some kind of theme?

I am trying to come up with one for Casper - I think Master of the Treasure is too long so I am looking for inspiration on how to come up with one!

Ive only had the chance to name two of my horses, the rest already had competition names before i bought them. The first horse i got to name was Barnaby, who had hunted all his life and as he was one of a kind we called him 'Just Barnaby' as he had too much character for anything else!! hehe!

The other horse i have named is one of my current ones 'Alfie Moon'. He came to me 5 years ago named Alfie and it was a toss up between 'Alfie Moon' as in the character out of Eastenders or 'What's it all about?' from the soundtrack to the film 'Alfie'. We eventually went with Alfie Moon as we could see the comedic value if he ever got eliminated using our second choice. The amount of people who remember him for his showname is incredible!!

Mr mare that passed away last year was called Willow. Which suited her fine but when I registered her with the BSJA I decided I wanted something a bit flashier for that and her passport, as back then she did not have one. I registered her as Elora Danan. At the time she was only a baby and that was the name of the baby from the film 'Willow'. Thought this might give you some ideas!!! Good luck, let us know what you choose.

I'd always wanted a horse since I was a kid. The one thing I consecutivly wantesd every christmas/birthday. So when I finally got one, Heart's Desire seemed obvious as thats what she was.

Darkest Dream came around similarly - the pony was the dream pony we were looking for so dream worked. And my sister, who rides her at competitions, is a gothic/emo child so darkest came about from that. Suits pony though since she's black.

If I am naming a horse we base it a lot on personality - the first we had was a really stubborn little new forest mare, and she was bought from beaulieu sales originally, so she became Beaulieu bay mischief. Noone could pronounce it though. Pharaoh was Eastern Promise, which I like, and Lenny is Cruise on Amiro, though it's kind of the wrong way around, because of his breeding.

My boys show name is Stop and Stare - because that is exactly what he does before he spins and gallops off!!!!!!!!!

My last boy was called Mole - coz he was black and used to bury me a lot!

My ex-racer didn't have a stable name until he was about four, (his racing name is African Sunset), so the people who bought him named him Howard after the trainer Howard Johnson, who had trained him previously!

Wow - some really creative names!!

I'm not creative at all and don't want to be one of these people that changes his show name every other day so need to put some thought into it!!!

My current front runner is "Masterplan", which is basically taken from my original idea of "master of the treasure". Babybear/bababear is my nickname for him as that's what he's like, a big, cuddly baby bear - very laid back and chilled so I may try and think of something around those traits!

Others I'd thought of were "SignalFire" - name of one of my fav songs which reminds me of him because of the lyrics - "in the confusion and the aftermath, you are my signal fire."

Another was "The great Escape" - you can almost make the work escape from Casper.

And finally "A spirited Begining" - one of the names of the film adaptations of Casper the friendly ghost - any of these any good?

I called one of my horses Cooler King Hilts after the Steve McQueen character in The Great Escape... This was after he ran straight into the wire fence and cut his leg. Daft horse.
PF's proper name is Charlie Big Potato. I have no explanation other than that it's the name of a song and I didn't choose it!

I used to name a lot of horses after film characters;
I had a Randle P McMurphy (seemed nuts but wasn't really) after Jack Nicholson's character in One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest and a Jimmy Malone (Sean Connery's character in The Untouchables)
And PF was (Clarice) Starling.
I'm awful for changing horses names

Well Mo came to us with that name so her show/passport name became Magic Moments.

Prince got his long name because he has a Princess on his dams side was born on a Saturday (Sabado is Portuguese for Sat & I am part Portuguese) Gemstar (he is a Gemini with a star) hence Prince Sabado Gemstar.

Giz is Cool Magick Gizmo - His sire is Cool Diamond Star, his dam is Magic Moments

Daughters first pony was called Brontie, her show name was Ellis Bell which was the pen name of one of the Brontie sisters.
Bear was originally Bare which is short for BAymaRE.
Ella my husband old horse was Miss Fitzgerald after the singer or Ellamental (elemental).
My coloured horse William was Will Be, this was decided after a afternoon drinking session, reasoning was that if he didn't do very well, he will be better next time or if he did well, we always said he will be something special.

Honestly, some of the names you inherit a horse with are really funny. Not horses but my black lab was called Pagent Queen -it Sooo didn't suit her!

My Henry looked like he'd carry a knight into battle, so I called him Sir Henry for his show name. Not the most original but it suited him.

theres a pony at my yard, Rosedale State fair, as he's from the rosedale stud, his dam and sire are Rosedale State Silver and Rosedale State Secret I beleive.

My horse is Penhalwyn Cheyenne, Penhalwyn being where he was bred and Cheyenne because of the old indian tribe, Cheyenne and the indians riding appys and all that, he's an Appy, suprise, Suprise and so it's Cheyenne for short!

We also have an Alfie moon.
we have, Olivers Silver Soldier, Ollie. dappled gray, Silver. Soldier, no Idea.
:p

Little Ego,
By Design,
Red Moon, He's bright bay with a white cresent moon marking over his bum, so he's actually skewbald, but it's the only white he's got.

Brooklyn Bright Spark (Sparky)

my old pony, Mayday Monsoon, She was born on Mayday and on the day there was a monsoon. fits well.

hehe, sorry for waffling.
