What makes owners "give up"

Just pondering - when you see the advert for 3 or 4 horses and all the tack and horse box - with the bottom line saying "owner giving up".... I just wonder what tips the owner over the edge?

Not read other posts but:

Marriage break up
illness

depression
Hubby/ wife forcing the issue
death in family

Heartbreak mainly...
I lost my gelding over a year ago, and sadly part of me died also. I had him since i was 16 so pretty much all my whole adult life. He died suddenly and unexpected, and i donated all rugs and belongings to my YO and walked away. I dont miss horses as such but i miss him everyday still. I cant see me going back to horses anytime soon either due to money and time issues. It was good whilst it lasted..

Me too lost Diamond a year ago mare of a million, she lives on in her son and not a day goes by without me thinking of her. I hate 3rd Dec

I am on the verge of making some life changing decisions - as many of you will remember I had a pretty bad accident this time last year and my ankle is not recovering - ok the bones have mended but the ligament and tendon damage is pretty awful - driving and walking are a challenge - let alone riding, mucking out and carrying waters.

This is what I fear, as its my yard we are paying to get it done daily so wages are more than the daily income and damage to tendons etc and I am only week 3 since the accident :(

I am thinking of having my boy put to sleep due to some lameness issues that are going through an insurance claim/vets etc - and he is powered by danilon at mo now but I cant afford to keep him much longer, plus I just dont have the time for him to do him properly. I doubt I would find a home good enough for him to be a companion or light hack etc, I have advertised him but unless someone special comes along I will seriously consider putting him to sleep peacefully in his field.

Coming from a long line of depressive people I certainly understand depression, and the depths of despair it can led to = and I for one know first hand how low you can go... when the only thing you want to do is sleep as then you dont have to think.

i to have been suffering depression and have been this low. My heart goes out to fellow sufferers. I also went throught the "im not good enough anymore" phase with my horse :(

In my case the cause of depression it was a number of things at home which came to a head when i lost my mare last year, depression just set in and all i wanted to do was sleep and get away form the world and everyone in it!!!

I am slowly gettin there but have good and bad days xx

Quite often see divorce etc, which I (perhaps very obnoxiously) always presume to mean husband paid for horse and could not afford it on own. I had a school friend (who gave up and now seems to like dubstep and the associated hobby of snorting stuff up your nose) whose mum had three horses, had an arena and fancy stable block built...and she didn't work. It was all from hubby's money. If they ever split up, she would have had no way of affording to keep them.

I don't really understand having them if you couldn't afford them on your own, for that reason.

When I lost Harry when I was 18, I fully blamed myself and probably would have had a very long break had I not still had Misty.
