A 4.5 yo (ie still growing) medium build 14.2 cob.
Have been asked to help school one but I am scared at 10.5 stone I will look like I am pony squishing?
Difficult to answer. A well ballanced 10.5 stone rider is not the same as a numpty bouncing about.yet it is not ideal. But wouldnt we all like to do things the "ideal "way But which is worse ? A bad start with the wrong rider ,or a good start at a less than perfect weight. Yearling thoroughbreds were backed with lads of about 7.5 stone yet I remeber one absolute bitch that had to be ridden by a lad of over 9.5 stone ,simply because none of the young lads could stay on. You just have to use your judgement and be careful.

I asked my vet, very experienced horse vet, out of interest what weight could my then 5 year old 14.2 cob 9.5" could carry and he said 11.5 stone.

Would that include tack though? I would think that is correct when it includes clothes, saddle etc, but it sounds quite a lot for a person if you add the other stuff too.

I feel a bit big for my new one, I have lost anther 4lbs since I got him, am now 10st10, and intend to lose some more. He is a 15.1 cob though (measured him last night to confirm) so a bit bigger.

I didn't think to ask if this would include tack, I would guess it would be rider weight but could be wrong. I do agree with you though, I wouldn't like to put 11.5st on him regularly, ok for occasionally but not for proper long term work. I think a good general guide is also saddle size, he fits a 16.5 or 17" saddle that has a shortish footprint.
