sorting the first aid box out last night & OH was laughing at what extras ive got & it got me wondering if im the only one with "ODD" stuff in my box.

so my box has extra,

disposable nappys - great for hoof sole injurys & knee/hock injurys.
sudocrem - great for soothing sunburn.
vasaline - OH SO MANY USES, prevent frostbite, keeps flies off wounds.....the list is endless
electrical tape - to hold bandages ect on cos its waterproof & cheap.
nailbrush - to shift mud/muck quickly.

whats in your box thats odd & why?

duct tape is ace for fixing things and keeping poltices put.
bags of salt for de-icing and saline.
vinegar for adding to fly spray.
also have the vaseline and sudocreme, with those and a bit of hibi scrub you have pretty much everything you need!

The usual nappies, but also

Nappy liners (for terry nappies) they are excellent for putting over wounds to stop bandages/gamgee sticking and can just be soaked off.

Panty liners, again, brilliant for putting over wounds that need gunk drawn out.

My Vet, as always, thinks I am potty, but he agrees that they can't do any harm and seem to do the job as well as any dry poultice. I haven't killed any of my horses using them over the years.

i have got some old terrys type preshaped nappys (totsbots for those that know) that are past use as nappys & am now racking my brains for uses for them.
shaped like disposables, velcro fastening & threadbear in places (the bum bit mainly lol)

I have also got nappies and panty liners in my first aid kit hehe , much cheaper that "proper" poultices and do the same job.

Also have electrical tape
And i found a old bottle of olive oil in there a few weeks ago...cant remember what i used it for though

have a bottle of hibbi scrub in human first aid kit (not unusual) as it gets rid of atheletes foot etc. but does have the vets sticker on!!!! OH hasn't seen the bottle yet!

it's contained in an old 5kg garlic powder tub - the biggest bucket with a lid that I could find!

I have a pot of factor 50+ suncream for horse or me!
all the usual stuff really, but also
a jar of epsom salt and a jar of table salt (for tubbing and saline respectively)
sudocrem
intrasite gel (for keeping wounds clean and moist so they heal with little scar as possible)
vaseline, but for the thermometer not for frostbite.

Enfys, i didnt know that. was told by friends that live out in finland to use it to stop the horses nostrils getting snot frozen into them (& prevent frostbite up there) & have done it for several years now.

Ah ha, there's the difference, maybe the fact that it is near the nostils warms it just enough. Learn something new every day:) I used it on chapped eyelids and muzzles and got well told off! (Get rid of that c**p is what he actually said;)) Zinc oxide for that I was informed. I expect Finland is a bit colder than we get here, as I am in the South and it is relatively mild (-20 rather than -30 kind of mild)

Peperation H cream (used in humans for piles!!) for sore mouths.
Caneston cream (sp) good for ringworm.
Golden eye, eye drops, is good when horses get weepy eyes in summer due to flies!!
Clingfilm for wrapping legs up in when trying to soften scabs with cream.
