22 month old Tb x Wb colt has a mysterious swelling on his near hind thigh. It really just appeared out of nowhere, the night before last. Its not hurting him, its not hard, theres no heat. But it does seem to be getting bigger. Im loathe to call the vet as i feel it'll probably just go away on its own but i always like a second opinion. It really is fluidy, it wobbles if you poke it and isnt like hard like a haematoma would be..

This was it when it was first noticed:

And this morning:

Then this evening:

What do we think?

Personally I wouldn't mess about with something like that and get a vet to have a look at it straight away. If it's ' growing' at that rate of knots it could be an abcess........or certainly tissue damage caused by a foreign object or a kick.

Well, its definitely not a kick because he hasnt been anywhere to warrat getting kicked. Its not hot so im thinking not an abcess. Surely though if it was either of those things there would be some kind of pain? Its not bothering him at all? :S

ETA: I did wonder if he'd got cast.. as his eye on the same side is a bit runny and its never like that.

From your description I would say it sounds like a hematoma which are often soft fluid filled sacks and it's what's inside that counts Not all swellings are hematomas. If the skin is punctured, even by a hole too small to find, and bacteria has entered, then the swelling is an abscess. This type of lump will be filled with a thicker, pus-like fluid that can range from white to yellow to red depending on the type of bacteria present. Try cold hosing it in short bursts to help with the swelling but my original advice still stands and I would get a vet to have a look.

VETS!!!! My TB used to blow up like this and he was very prone to getting septicemia...he could literally have a dinky scratch and be like a balloon within 24 hrs then you for the nose bleeds and a very sick horse! I would imagine that was either blood (haematoma) or fluid.. either water or pus, either way it looks horrid, wish your horse better real soon X

Well, this morning it seems to have hardened up which makes me think haematoma. The swelling itself hasnt increased at all though. Still no heat and its not causing him any pain. Im gonna give the vet a bell this afternoon and email pics! Ta for the advice!
