I'm having a bit of a dilemma!

Basically i'm in a position to buy a new horse, which is super exciting but scary because i really want to get it right!

Originally i was looking for a decent 4yo to do age classes on(showjumping) i have seen a couple of nice ones and i am planning on taking a trip abroad next month to try a few which i am really looking forward to!

Here's the big BUT.... When i was trying a 4yo out the owner said they also have a nice 6yo that would be a good contender for this years 6yo classes, hes a bit more than i was wanting to pay but oh lord can this boy jump and gave such a good ride!!

My question is if i was to purchase the 6yo how much would you think he would be worth, i only ask as i think they are wanting a bit too much for him :-/ he is jumping dc around fowhunters and has been placed in grade c's, he's a windsucker(i already have one so that doesn't bother me) and has a small splint on one of his back legs that has apparently been checked by the vet and is fine.

I don't want to disclose the price as i am really interested in your figures as i could be completely wrong and the price might be about right!

A good 6 yr old I would expect anywhere between 20k and 30k, if talented enough to jump round age classes and be in the money. 6yr old stuff is pretty meaty! And a lot of good 6yr olds go on to be serious horses in the future.

FYI friend just sold a 7yr old chap, green but scopey Dutch horse, jumped him round a few NC for £16k, Schooling 1.30 at home had he been a 6yr old he would have been double that. Would say go to holland directly as you will pay less than over here. Another friend just paid 20k for a nice 5yr old. I know of a smashing 5yr old 16.2hh dark bay mare, bred to do top job and v. Quality, they want 10k for her.

wow you sound a very experienced horse owner, so I think only you can answer this question...... rather than ask a multitude of people who have no idea of the merits or experience of the horse you are trying, and then asking for a price.....well how long is a piece of string..... only you know that, take your trainer or friend they will give you a much better idea,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

I am experienced enough chestnut horse i only asked on here to get an unbiased opinion from people and i'm not sure on the fact that because the said horse windsucks if it actually affects his value or not as he seems to be a potential superstar, i have already had someone tell me that it does and someone tell me it doesn't!

I have a 9 year old that windsucks and although he is a great horse the price was greatly reduced because of the vice, but i don't know if the same rule follows for a promising yougster as he still has a fair old pricetag attached to his name!

Thanks natalia, that was helpful :)

It will all depend on exactly how good the horse is as for a decent one for age classes you would probably be looking in the £15 to 30k area but if it has the potentiall to go a lot further the price could go to 6 figures so its a very elastic area for that sort of horse and for tht sort of horse I would want it scoped in case of ulcers but would not be over worried about the windsucking

Thanks crabbymare, well hes certainly not in the 6 figure region lol! Yeh thats what i have been finding the price varies greatly from horse to horse which is not very helpful, as i am still no further forward! i would like to wait until after my trip to Holland to make a decision but at the same time if i do and don't like any of them as much as this one then find out it's sold i will be rather upset!
Yes scoping would definitely have to be part of the vetting process!

The windsucking does not bother me, i already own one lol! Just wasn't sure if it affects the price of a horse with this much potential but i'm starting to understand that it doesn't seem to! The prices suggested on here sound about right anyway!

I think windsucking will have far less affect on the price of a horse destined to be a real performer than if it was an average type, if it does the job what it gets up to in it's spare time is not something to worry about.

Seen a lot of horses for sale like this recently for around 7k. 15-20k was what you would have paid a few years ago.

I'd buy it for that but get your own vet to check that splint isn't a thoroughpin or something! And find out why they're so keen to sell it - possibly not going to be a top horse?
