I know this market is difficult at the moment but would like to know what you think the following is worth please... 15.2 ISH 9 yr old mare done some pony club & jumping upto 80 max, hacks alone & gets a little excitable in company but with breaks, very green in the school but willing. Feet are a little cracked & has an old scar on hind end with scar tissue - looks sound trotted up. Got the opportunity to perhaps trial before purchasing. Only looking for a glorified happy hacker for beach/fun rides/holidays/low level dressage & mainly hacking. Thank you :)

I think I’d want to know more about what the scar tissue is from, how long the horse has been sound and what level of work it’s currently in.

I’m assuming you’re thinking of buying not selling?

Yes looking at buying, seller says they don't know what scar is from was there when purchased 2 x years ago. Currently ridden aprox 4 x a week out at pony camps / hacking & jumping mainly

Sounds like a useful type- I have no real idea on price, but I’ve seen similar advertised for £5k+ although without blemishes (well, at least ones declared in the ad!)...although possibly more in current market.
I’d definitely get a vetting/ consult your vet about the scar tissue though. Where is it and does it more look like an accident or the result of surgery?

Nice size, nice age, happy hacker with option of doing fun extras happy to turn hoof to jumping etc. is what a lot of people are looking for

If you aren't showing and scar is bum not a leg I'm be surprised if it had any impact on value at all.

Assuming passes a vet and seller open to you using your vet then at £5k would be a bargain. I think people would pay up to twice that if she has a nice personality and willing attitude, easy to handle etc.

The fact the seller is willing to do a trial says a lot to me, I would get the trail arranged asap if you liked the feel of her on viewing. You can then get your farrier / trimmer to check out her feet while she is with you - (likely better knowledge than vet for feet) and even physio to look at scar - again they are more specialist in muscular issues than a vet.

I’ve just brought a new one recently and I’d say £7.5-11k in the current market. If they’re sound, pass a vetting and a nice person then below £10k would be a very good price at the moment.

she sounds exactly what i would want as a happy hacker/low level riding club , i have been window shopping and depending on where she is in the country anything between £6 and £8,000 as long as she passes the vet.... if you like her i would get a vetting done by a vet of your choice, ask your own vet to recommend if its out of their area or ask on here for recommendations, get this done while still with the seller. if all goes ok and you can have her on trial , go for it. keep us updated, she sounds nice

I would also discuss with your vet the option of scanning the scarred area. In the current strong market I'd say anything from £5K upwards. If the scar is confirmed as being cosmetic only then 5 grand would be a bargain.

They are asking for £9k with tack. Not been on the market long but she was just a bit scruffy (the scar/blemishes) & green for the price. I feel like I am cheating on my little cob that I bought under a year ago but every time I ride I just want a little more, she's been a great little pony, never puts a foot wrong & has been a godsend for fun/safe rides out this year as my son is only just turning one! I'm torn about what to do, but maybe I just need to keep looking till I find one that I really click with. I don't want to just make do just because the market is difficult at the moment

The tack isn’t anything amazing, the saddle was a really old bates, it seemed to fit ok but I don’t think it’s worth a lot. Bridle was just a cheapie. Yeah I think they are asking a lot and I’m sure someone will pay it, for me I was just expecting more and the advert made her sound more than what she is

9k sounds a little ambitious. I’d be wondering why the feet are cracked and how much work it was going to take to make them not cause an issue.

Think I’d see if I could haggle to £7K without tack. Presumably a really old saddle could do with re-flocking/adjusting and I think I’d rather spend a few quid on a decent saddle, particularly if hacking is your main aim. The market is insane currently!

Can you speak to their farrier re the cracks? Is it sandcracks? Something more serious?

I too think £9k is a little steep for something with question marks hanging (hoof cracks and scarring), although it’s hard to tell how serious each of these are. I think I’d also want something a little more established in the school for that money as a nine year old.

Someone will probably buy at that price but personally think it’s a little steep…

mine is fairly similar, but without the blemishes and with good feet, plus has competed to Novice dressage. I’m thinking of asking for 9.5k including a 5yo Bates GP saddle (recently checked and fitted to him)

Yes thanks all you’ve confirmed my thoughts that it’s too much

Excuse my turn of phrase, but if it's not a f*ck yes, it's a no.

One will come along that you will be desperate for, and will be seeing if you can get the money together rather than 'there's a bit wrong, is it too much'

Good luck!

OP I think she will sell for that and in current market isn't unfair vs. others I've seen, she has potential to improve in the school and as an 11 y/o with a 12 month riding club record £12-14k would be very reasonable in current times.

But equally it's a lot to spend if you didn't get a great feeling, so while not the right one for you that doesn't IMHO mean she is over priced.

Things are only worth what one other person is prepared to pay and with horses when so much is personal choice that figure can vary wildly.
