I'm going to be brave this year and venture out to do some small local ridden showing classes with my 11 year old Norwegian Fjord Minty. Last year we did a bit of in-hand work and he was a big hit in the ring, he never got placed any lower than 3rd. He moves okay, has nice paces, but doesn't really go in an "outline". I would have to ride him in a double bridle with a rugby pelham (his mouth is too small for 2 bits) as he gets strong and excited when being ridden with other horses so I'd like to have control. He's funny with jumping, he'll either pop a fence nicely or go bolting over it, broncing as he goes, like a loony bin, and he just looooves to embarass me in public so there's no way I'm doing a class that involves a jump!

So what can I do with him? People have suggested to me to do M&M, but he's not a native breed to the UK, so don't really want to do that, and none of the local shows here have foreign breeds classes. Could I do ridden hunter? What else?

I have attached a photo of him being ridden by me, he's a bit tubby in it but you can see he has a decent stridey trot on him!

A lot of shows also have equitation classes where you are marked purely on your riding ability. Tack and turnout you could do too although that shouldn't involve anything other than walking round. But definitely no to ridden hunter.

If there's a class for coloureds including duns, foreign bred, Riding Club Horse (may be a small jump).

DEFINATELY do not take him an M&M class, I can guarentee he will be at the bottom of the line as he is not a breed eligable for these classes. I was at a show and someone brought a fjord in and they were (rightly so) at the end of the line.

He's lovely looking but not right for ridden hunter I'm afraid.

you could do foreign breeds (if there isn't a class maybe you could suggest it is added to the schedule?), coloured(most local shows include coloureds and odd coloureds), and family pony, which usually has a small x pole in.
best turned out!
defo not m&m!
you may be surprised about 2 bits, my pony doesn't have a particulary big mouth, but with a small loose ring snaffle, with a tom thumb curb bit she is very happy, she hates a rugby pelham! but if yours is happy in a rugby that is fine too!
good luck :)

Ok thanks, that's what I suspected. Some people told me I could do ridden hunter classes with him or others told me I couldn't, so just wanted to make absolutely sure of the difference. The fjord breed is difficult to find classes for, I wish someone would make a fjord show!!:p

I'm in the same boat as you,one of mine is a Noriker (austrian draught horse) who can't jump, and have never managed to find a foreign breed class, so have trouble finding anything to enter her into too! :(
