Just curious really, as people seem to have very different ideas on rugging. So far all the horsey people I have seen today have had completely different weights of rug on thier horses.

I am talking fully clipped horses, in at night, in full work.

Cheers

Mine are all hunter clipped and wear heavyweight (full neck or half neck) Rambo turnouts in and out. If it's mild I take the neck cover off and if it's particularly cold at night I might put an extra layer on underneath, either a fleece or underrug.

Until the temperatures dropped over the last few days, I had a lightweight on my mare by day and a medium weight with a full neck at night. Then we went to the medium full neck day and night and today I've moved to a heavy weight full neck at night and the medium by day.

I give more thought to her clothes than my own

200g cheapo under rugs with Orica 360g combo by weatherbeeta in the field for snoopy, winston has same under rug with a 400g TAKA weatherbeeta NZ.
Same under rugs and Mark Todd 400g Combo stable rugs for at night.
Thermatex wraps at night on winston and bertie - helps keep arthritic horses warm plus winston has all his fur off including legs.

mine has a fleece, a 100g underrug and a 200g turnout, (or 200g stable rug at night. he is fully clipped bar legs but including face. I believe layers keep them warmer than heavy rugs but if the temp gets really cold i will put a heavier outer rug on. So far his ears have been toasty warm at 7am 3.30pm and 9pm when i check them

Cotton sheet, thinish stable rug and MW combo turnout (yes he wears this at night - lazy huh?!). Also thermatex leg warmers as his legs are clipped out too. Stables are quite warm ones.

as its minus 4 tonight he has a fleece, 115gram combo underrug and 300gram stable rug. His clip has now virtually grown back but his stable is drafty as he has all windows open as he suffers from the dust. (dispite being on halyage and easibed!!) When i clip him again hell have a HW stable instead of the 300gram and fleece. Then the fleece and bandages for even colder nights if i need them.

In the day atm hes just in a 360gram fullneck and milder days a half neck 220gram but when i re-clip itll go up to the full neck all the time with fleece/underrug on.

Mine is fullly clipped now and she was in MW turnout and L/W weight stable layered with thin under rug. Now it has turned very cold here so I have put her in H/W Orican turnout in day and MW GFS stable rug at night. I will add under rug if necessary when it gets really freezing.

Patches and Tweenie are both fully clipped. They've been going out in a padded lighter medium weight in the day as it's a bit draughty when the wind blows along the motorway's valley and across our fields.

They had been just having a neck cover on the same rugs at night. However, tonight I decided it was time I got some thicker rugs out as it's forecast to be as low as minus three. Patches and Tweenie both have heavy weight combo necked turnouts. Not the heaviest of heavy weights, but warmer than their medium.

Dinker has a trace clip and is un-rugged day and night still. Oliver has bib clip and has a lightweight summer turnout in the day (although he had no rug on yesterday as it was so sunny) and a light weight stable rug at night.

I keep wondering if I'm under rugging, but I hate to think of them all padded up and cumbersome. They have plenty of haylage, internal stables and all seem warm.

Our show hunter pony has a hunter clip and has a h/w rambo combo turnout and at night a cotton s/sheet(i like them to have these on first once clipped) , combo under rug m/w with normal neck h/w rambo stable on top. If she is cold when i check later she has an extra lite quilt to go on.

I have a fully clipped TB who is worked everyday. She is turned out in a HW rug with a fleece underneath. When its really cold (like last night!) she wears a 13.5 tog kingsize duvet (from my bed!!) with a fleece over the top to keep it secure, then has a HW combo rug over the top of that. She really feels the cold and is never too hot in the morning!

470g Bucas Power full neck on day and night. Mark Todd Coolex leg wraps on at night for extra warmth. If it gets very, very cold (as in under -7 or thereabouts) he'll have an under rug as well at night.
