my tbxcon on box rest has a medium full neck on with under rug on when colder at night or mag rug under. He gets soooo cold! The other boy has a heavy wug stable on at night and a medium wug turnout during the field. Need to buy some heavy weights though soon as havnty got one for the new one and Maly needs a new one during the winter, thougt i would treat him as in the stable all the time!

I am in NE Scotland so bit colder up here than you southerners

Don't forget that horses continue to grow their coats throughout winter.....

. They don't just stop growing their coats because they are in rugs.

By the way OP - mine remain in their M/W rugs all winter.

My tbxcon loses condition SOOOOOOOOOOOOO much over winter, hard at the best of times but he went from extreme fitness condition and rapidly resulted to very little. He is not clipped and although fed and given as much hay as possible as well as supplements he just loses condition as well as getting cold very easily! He has the mag rug on most of the day apart from when it is getting washed! At night he has amedium full neck on at night with mag rug on. I dont put three full necks on! Gosh he would be more than toasty if i did that FMN! LOL
The other is fully clipped and has a medium wug on when turned out during day, warmer rug the heavier wug at night as obvi much colder and again i was told before buying him that he gets colder than average.

I've got one of mine in a HW turnout with neck cover as he's fully clipped. He will wear an under rug as well when it gets really cold. My 4 yo has a blanket clip and is in a MW turnout with neck cover. Both my boys wear their turnouts in the stable & the field in the winter. This is the first year I've done this but I've always hated taking a warm rug off in the morning & putting a cold one on!!

Jim is an ID, unclipped but tends to feel the cold. Tonight he's wearing a HW full neck stable rug, was turned out this morning in a MW but I nipped up lunch time & took it off for a couple of hours as the weather was glorious! Last night was really cold so he had a LW stable rug under his HW & wasn't too warm.

Little Un is a 2yo sec D. The last couple of nights he's had a MW turnout on in the stable (I'm not buying him many rugs while he's still growing) but he's normally unrugged in the stable & only has a tunout on if it's wet.

Forget Me Not if it gets colder I put on more rugs, I won't have Jim cold in the stable now just because it may be colder in January. I appreciate horses feel the cold differently but his behaviour strongly suggests he prefers to be rugged & warm

Mine is currently in a 300g stable rug (no neck) at night and a 200g (no neck) in the day if frosty, or a lightweight and a neck if not frosty. Will have her new fal 40gm on when it arrives next week! She's usually a warm person but has been getting cold in this weather recently. I'm getting her a 370g with hood for the depths of winter, hopefully she'll survive in that.

220g turnout with hood. she's blanket clipped and lives out

she's lost a bit of weight but i am not freaking out yet as she was overweight anyway and i'm trying to get her slim this winter so i can keep her fit next summer.

Bean is quite a fine build and just the right weight (so can't risk her loosing weight). She is blanket clipped, at night she is in a standard neck 360g stable rug and in the day she is out in a 300g full neck turnout. I am just ordering her a 400g rug for use after xmas. Really can't risk her loosing weight.

Galaxy is not so finely built and is a very good doer. She is chaser clipped. She is in a 360g rug at night and in either a 250g rug or a 300g rug in the day.

It's getting down to about -5 here at night and been hovering at about 5 degrees during the day (although the wind is making it feel colder)

Mines out in his Rambo supreme.. I do have a spare Duo liner though (300g) one that can attach just fine to the supreme should he need. Although Im hoping he wont be that bad!

Inside, I switched earlier in the week to his Rambo Jumbo wug which is a massive 550g (he'd previously been in a Mark Todd h/w stable rug with a masta full neck under rug).

Its very very cold here at night and for a few days last week, the frost wasnt clearing during the day which is the kind of weather and temperatures we normally experience in January.

If it gets milder over the next week, the jumbo wug is coming off and he's going back to the mark todd... IF for some bizarre reason (or if you believe the Guardian!), we are in for an extremely cold winter, then ive got some under rugs on standby.

I was planning on ordering a snuggy rugs snuggy-jams though for the real depth of winter...

All this being said... my boy feels the cold terribly and isnt clipped (nor will he be clipped)

Mine's had LW turnout on for about a week and LW stable rug on last couple of nights as has gone pretty chilly. She's a Welsh and unclipped though so doesn't get too cold!

Pan (cob I part loan) has been out as he is and will probably have LW on soon.

2 of mine are fully clipped and another is chaser clipped. They wear a mw turnout during the day and a fleece and MW stable rug at night. My little retired pony wears a MW full neck turnout with thermatex as an underrug, and at night she wears a fleece, duvet and horseware insulator stable rug. The 2 yearlings are still naked and come into a nice warm barn at night. Despite being naked they do not seem to want to grow any more winter coat!!

Mine live out 24/7 all year round and don't rug as a rule. Daughters pony and shettie get a low trace but don't require rugging.

Governor is being turned out in either a lightweight with a fleece underneath or his Mark Todd heavyweight (i'll probably get the neck cover eventually).

He's got a mediumweight (light/medium its not particularly thick) stable rug on with a fleece underneath tonight. The fleece will probably be replaced with a quilt eventually.

He's got a blanket clip and a tendancy to lose condition (more so muscle) over winter.

Mine has a polo clip (I think this is what it is called... anyway, it is somewhere between a blanket and a chaser clip)

She is out in a M/W turnout with a neck and in at night with a fleece under a M/W stable rug. I"m still shopping to try and get her a decent underrug.
