Your tb's? Celine currently doesn't have any saddles that fit her particularly well so we are currently doing mostly ground/in hand work to keep her ticking over until I can get the saddler out, been an expensive month so haven't got the funds just now!.. We don't have a very big budget and I have my suspicions that celine is going to change shape quite a lot as she still has filling out to do and will be in more work come springtime so I'm looking into getting an adjustable, synthetic saddle to accommodate her changing and then hopefully save up to invest in something better.

She does have high withers but they aren't mountainous and she isn't particularly narrow, more medium leaning to medium/wide. I've been looking at the thorowgood hi wither model and possibly a second hand kent and masters hi wither model, but just wanted to hear what you guys use/recommend etc..

Thank you if you got this far and look forward to hearing what saddles you fin best when on a budget!

Hate, hate, synthetics. Go for a nice old fashioned second hand leather saddle. If your horse changes shape you can re sell with little loss of ££. Synthetics are finished after a few years, and dont sit well on the horse. A good saddler with a second hand section should fit you up nicely.

Thank you for your opinion, obviously going to try on lots of saddles with the saddler and decide what works for her best, just wanted to gather general opinions and experiences :)

I have a bog standard wintec GP on my four year old with a MW gullet.

I don't really like synthetics either but as I know she's going to change shape and because I didn't know if she'd fall over on it and trash it (which she actually has done the little devil  ) it seemed the sensible way to go. So glad I didn't buy the nice leather jeffries one the saddler bought as I'd feel awful if I'd ruined that. It was the same cost but would have been such a tradgedy! The wintec I treat like carp and don't worry about. Quite liberating actually :)

Saddler said the other thing that might have worked was actually a kent and masters cob saddle as mine is particularly short in the back and these have nice short panels.

obviously you need a saddler etc etc but this is mine for reference

Thank you , this is my approach with celine, she's still a baby, will change shape and could ruin it! Just looking for something to tide us over for a year or maybe two :) beautiful horse btw!

Mine will likely as not be replaced next summer but I'm just so glad I didn't buy something nice when she was being a rat bag! It really is pretty trashed already!

And thank you. I think she's very pretty but I'm probably biased:)

She looks very Arab like in the first picture! :) lovely girl, I'm also very biased, especially towards thoroughbred haha

We have a wintec vsd on our 16:2 tb who has a good wither. It's cair as well. He works fab in it.

I don't get the above post about them not lasting? One of my wintecs I have has nearly 8 years and its still going strong. They do last if you look after them.

Yes I've known people who have had synthetics last years,I won't be doing loads and loads in it anyway and would look after it, just looking for the cheapest option without compromising Celines health :)

I like synthetics (would prefer but struggle to afford leather- as have 7 horses, 6 that are ridden), but if I did get leather I would get a Bates with adjustable gullet. I have wintecs and really like the isabelle worth wintec.

I have found that they last well, and you can have the fit checked and adjusted easily as the horse changes shape. they are light, and easy to maintain. I have not had any back problems with the horses with them.

I would also love some thing like a bates (maybe one day!) thank you for sharing your experience of them

What about a saddle company saddle? Leather, cheapish, they make the saddle espesh for your horse and will last a life time as fully adjustable everywhere. Mine is perfect.

My sister jumps her tb up to 3'6 in it and will be going higher when he is ready. It gets schooled in, hacked in, sj and xc in three/four times a week so it is heavily used and its still looking new two years on.
I can't rate them enough.

Thank you, can't wait to get the saddler out, walking C out in hand is great but its nice to be on top! Not to mention less tiring! :)

We tried a one for ours but the, forgive me if I explain this wrong, but where it sits on the shoulder and down where the changeable plate is was too long for our tb. He has very big shoulders and it was digging in restricting him. The wintecs are shorter plates so you have more movement for bigger shoulder horses if that makes sense.

Yes makes perfect sense thank you, I guess like everything with horses it's trial and error! (:

Yep it's trail and error. We first had a bates but it was too long and the fitter didn't check the saddle properly so it had a screwed up pad in its left side causing pinching and pain. Got the thoroughgood and new saddler sat it on him and said font even bother getting on and showed us why. Then we went to the vsd. The saddle flaps are cut a little longer to give longer legged ppl a nicer seat. Since our tb can only have a 17" max as at 16:2 he has a small rib cage it give my sister room for her long legs.

Yes that would be helpful as I have long legs! How much would the charge roughly be to have the saddler out and just try on a range of saddles as I don't think I would buy one there and then?

For me it's around £35 ish for call out. Maybe ring up and ask? Ate you looking to get a second hand one?
Our vsd cost £400 brand new. But it only comes with a black plate dans our tb has been in a blue one when he was bulking out with topline and is now back in a black. The plates cost £17 each if you need a new size but I've got loads so my saddler doesn't charge to change.

Yeah will definitely ring up and ask, haven't decided on which saddler yet so going to ring and investigate to see what selection of saddles they have. I would buy second hand if in good condition to help the bank balance but would buy a new saddle if need be :)
