I am looking to buy a saddle for my young Fell pony. I have had him measured and he is 16 inch xx wide. He is like a barrel and i have no idea what saddle would suit him. Any Fell owners out there have any suggestions? I havent got a large budget

I had to go treeless for my girly. She had a Thorowgood cob with the widest gullet but it still pinched behind her massive shoulders. I got a second hand trekker to see how she would find a treeless saddle and she is very happy in it. I am saving up for something more dressagy!

Gosh that sounds wide!!!

Treeless tend to make you ride wide anyway and on a wide horse the whole situation is compounded, also there is a danger of slippage if there isn't much wither to the pony/horse.

You could try a Wintec or Thorowgood; I've tried both on my trad cob and the Thorowgood was so blimmin uncomfortable that I had to get off after only half an hour riding in it - tho' might suit yours. I've got a Wintec Wide saddle at the moment but can't wait to find something better!! OK so they may be OK for narrower horses but I really don't like the way their Wide saddle in particular sits.

Just a suggestion but why don't you PM to "sbloom" on here as she's the expert with this sort of fitting situation???

Definitely Ideal H&C, I have one in an xxx-wide tree, it is also possibly to alter them slightly if you send them to Ideal. If your pony is only young then just watch for him filling out, mine didn't stop maturing until she was about eight.

My very flatbacked NF with no withers has just had a WH saddle conpany saddle made to fit with serge lining. He wears a stubben cord girth with it and it doesn't move at all even when the girth isnt done up tightly. Before that he had a wintec and it was rubbish on him.
