Iv seen a few threads on here lately about what saddles are best for young horses so sorry to ask again but i just want to be sure about it really.

I am planning way ahead as my filly is still a while off backing yet but the trouble is i already have an Idea Impala saddle sat in the tack room, it is my only saddle and i really love it but i want to know if this will be of any use for her? If not i shall get rid of it now to save it hanging around and nearer the time of backing Boots i shall find something more suitable.

What is the ideal saddle to back and ride a youngster in? I dont want to be spending a fortune so like the idea of maybe a wintec or a saddle company saddle but i dread the horror stories of them as well!

I would suggest a thorowgood with the gullet changers. I'm on my second one now, and wouldn't have anything else - the last one looked brand new after 5 years riding daily on it. Now got a new one for my youngster. sm x

I'd go with an adjustable gullet throwgood or wintec. My mare went through about 3 diferent saddles/adjustents between breaking and 5yrs

If youngster is wide/flat backed coblet then a Thorowgood cob saddle would be good. I backed in a treeless but then did all the early work with the Thorowgood and she liked it so much I havent ever had to move on from that, we still have it! The only thing I did with it was the girth straps are rather stiff being synthetic and so its hard to do it , so I had the most used two on each side replaced with leather for £10 a strap.

If a narrower type then either Wintec or T'good tho I do favour Thorowgood.

The good thing about them is they are easy and cheap to buy and readily saleable afterwards if they dont suit or horse changes shape drastically. They are also very light which I think is important when poor ned has lumpy old us on them, anything that reduces weight!

I plan on buying the thorowgood T6 for my youngsters, but will still have a saddle fitter out for them and will only buy if they fit properly. If they dont fit, I really dont know!!! x

I have always backed my youngsters with a synthetic saddle.
the first one is normally a knackered, cheap synthetic. It doesn't matter if it's an exact fit as it's just used for leading them around in it, long reining etc and doesn't matter if they throw themselves on the ground, knock it off the stable door or stand on it etc.
I then get a saddle fitter out and go for a Thorowgood saddle that you can change the gullet size so you can adjust with them changing shape and is also lightweight.
I don't normally get a leather saddle until they are 4/5.

Thanks everyone, Im glad that you all recomended a synthetic saddle. Boots is Cob X WB, she is on the lighter side tho, i expect her to look like a very light weight cob once fully grown. I shall look in to it nearer the time then, i just wanted to have an idea of how much i need to save lol. I will get a saddle fitter out but just wanted to be on the right lines first. Thanks people :)
