Can anyone suggest any saddles which have flatter trees suitable for a very flat-backed horse?

I currently have the Bates elevation, Ideal Grandee and Jeffries VSS but they are difficult to get hold of second hand, and expensive new.

Also, my horse is quite short and needs a 17" saddle, but I've noticed most second hands are 17.5 - is there really that much difference between the two?

Thanks!

My saddler recommended a GFS Event or an Ideal International Event for both mine that are flat/short backed. He told me to go for 16 1/2" or 17 and I managed to find a lovely GFS Pro Event in a 17" which I am well happy with.

I'm having the same problem for my horse and have yet found a saddler to find a jumping saddle to fit.

I currently ride him in a made to measure Farrington gp saddle, I also know the Bates/Wintec Isabell Werth dressage saddle fits him well.

I've got a Jeffries Falcon F1 jumping saddle on my boy which suits us, don't know whether that'd be any good?
My saddler mentioned (before we found the F1) that I might have to go close contact to get a tree shape to fit him. He suggested Albion Kontrol or Kontact or and Ideal Impala, don't know whether any of those are any good though as I didn't get round to trying them on him!

clipcloppop - the caprilli is too curved but the elevation has a flatter tree, and so fitted my horse very well when I tried it. Shame about the £1500 tag!

It's a close contact I want anyway, so thats promising! But the event saddle all seem to be too fofrward cut, with too high a cantle (I am fussy...), but I'll have a look at the ones you've mentiones, thanks guys :)

saddler suggested the ideal grandee, so maybe the ideals have flatter trees? I will ring her up tomorrow to suggest these ones.

Brilliant, thanks!

My TBX is quite long backed, but very broad so needs a flatter tree, just got a Kent & Masters Cob GP, it fits like a glove :)

i had a bates caprilli, absolutley loved it, fitted me perfect, orgeous burgundyish colour and absolute bargain, however numpty saddle fitter was useless and it obviously didnt fit the ned due to tree shape! i went to a master saddler and have a jefferies 17.5" falcon hawk event, is slightly too big for me, but apart from that horse seems very happy in it although its now bedded down and is due to be checked asap... perfect fit after last slight flocking adjustment thoughm would highly recomend them
