what saddles have you got for very wide cobs estimate about a xxxw am struggling a bit to find one. should i go for a treeless? anyone have any experience of these?
Good saddles for flat cobs include the Thorowgood cob (widest one). For posh leather, the Ideal H&C (which seems to come up 1 X wider than the Thorowgood where the width is described the same). Or a treeless, I think the best are Treefree Dartmoor/exmoor, uk made ones, lovely quality. Or, depending on whether you jump or not, if you dont, maybe something like an Icelandic saddle, my neighbour does endurance on her Fell with that.
Ideal are good, either the H&C tree or if the horse is totally flat backed the FWB tree. GFS Haflinger is similar to the H&C. Native pony saddle company are another one that specialise in this type of horse. Duett are an American brand that again specialise in the wide horse who now have a British offshoot, widely regarded on US boards but I've yet to hear of anyone over here who has one.
Personally, after outgrowing the Ideal H&C tree (this was before the FWB tree was invented), I ended up going for a Free & Easy and now have 2 of those for my cob. I have tried a couple of treeless on him but my hips don't go wide enough to sit on him comfortably without having a structured saddle there to help raise me off his back enough to let my legs drop down.
My Ideals came from David at Throstle Nest, and I do have an 18" Ideal Jessica (dressage model) on a H&C tree looking for a new home if you're interested!!!
