Hi all,

may seem like a mad question but ive been on a straw only yard for a while now but am going to one i can use shavings at, so ive been off shavings a while.
I always used to love hunter shavings but i realise they aren't easy to get hold of now, so what does everyone think is best?

Horse isnt messy and i want something fluffy not like bedmax

I use halmac with a pellet underneath. I find it works really well when its settled in. Its the only one that doesn't make my horse cough but it is no totally dust free of course.

Natural Flake. Lovely big flakes of shaving which make a lovely bed. I deep litter mine and do a weekly muck out and they work really well.

I love Thoroughbred savings. Not dusty, tightly packed bales, smaller flakes and absorbent but not the cheapest.
I had an old bale in the lean to round the side of my Mums house a few months ago - I couldn't believe the weight of it, nor the spreadable volume.
Metsa Wood have a Stable Choice shavings, which is around the £7.00 mark which includes VAT. Its 22KG and goes a long way. A lot of us pool together on the yard and get one delivery. The company have branches up and down the country and will deliver free if your stables are within 20 miles of them.

I use mega spread when I can get them or one supplier does a similar product called pure flake there a bit cheaper and a smaller bale but there good, I prefer the larger flake type shaving.

My YO buys Hunters in bulk as there is a shop at the yard as well. I really like them, but with all shavings, there is a certain amount of dust but that is useful for a mare who likes to 'save' herself to pee in her stable
