This is very long...sorry!
I am currently looking at a loan horse very locally to me. The lady knows I am a competent (enough) rider for her horse as she often sees me out and about on the share pony or on my friend's five year old.
I rode her for the first time today after spending a lot of time chatting to the lady a few days ago. She is ideal for me (as far as I could see) and her only problem was as soon as she turned for home she started to jog. This in itself was not enough to put me off as it wasn't bad or dangerous however I would like advice on how to cope with it please.
The main horse I ride is exceedingly forward going and is a law unto herself. She regularly jogs and it is a sign she is about to set off so I nip it in the bud with a tightening of the contact on the reins. I then have to maintain this contact because, from experience, I know if I loosen it she bolts with me.
Unfortunately the loan horse rides far better with a loose contact and out of habit when she started to jog I tightened my contact, this made her worse as she is unused to it and as soon as I was instructed to give her the rein and I did she slowed down. This makes me nervous as giving up the rein to my share pony leaves me with a bolting horse (which is why I am looking for something a bit more sensible at the moment).
How can I improve this situation as apart from this she was my perfect horse and I know that the only problem I have with her should be easy to fix apart from my bad habits..
(Large box of Belgian chocolates for getting this far, and another for those who reply!)
