Ok, so I keep my horse on a farm that has a few stables, the YO is not horsey and doesn't have anything to do with us.
No one worms there horses, and I have brought it up several times to no avail.
Moving yards is not an option nor is individual turnout.
So should I continue worming to keep on top of Roo's worms, or is it completely ineffective?
 
Definately continue worming, it is the only way you will be able to keep your horses worm load under control. You might like to do a worm count just to check.
 
I was just about to say "do a worm count" and if it comes back not looking good ? then maybe it might get the other people's butts in to gear? and they may start to worm their horses?
 
I'll be honest, I have only wormed her once in the one and a bit years I've had her, because I thought it would be completely ineffective.
So what can I do.
How do I go about getting a worm count done, and how much on average will it cost.
Also what wormer can I use to get it under control, bearing in mind how long since I last wormed, and what sort of programme should I use to get rid of whatever she may now have
 
most vets do it for around 10 to 15

Too be honest if it is that long chances are not good for a clear one so you are best worming first
I would do Equest Paramox then get your worm count done about 10 to 14 days later.
 
Do other livestock graze the fields ie sheep/cows?
Is there rotation of fields?
If so the burden may be low anyway unless a horse arrives with a heavy burden and is not wormed before joining the herd.

You need to worm your horse for tapeworms now, use double Strongid P or as above Equest Pramox it will do tapeworms and all major worm groups in one dose.

If you have had bot eggs on your horses legs this summer you need to dose with ivermectin after first frost if you used Strongid P above

You need to worm for encysted redworm--moxidectin/Equest in February

Next year start doing regular worm egg counts through the summer and worm if needed but still dose for tapeworms and encysted redworm

As above, worm with Equest Pramox (blue box) now (autumn) and spring. This also kills tapeworms. Winter and summer use Equest (green box). Both of these products give you 13 weeks ongoing protection so your horse will continue to benefit even if the pasture is contaminated.

It's worth doing a worm count now as a benchmark, but it won't show if your hrse has a tapeworm burden, you would need an ELISA blood test for that which your vet could arrange, and if you're getting that done they may as well do the fecal egg count too, otherwise you can use one of the postal DIY kits. If your horse has a high worm burden there's a risk of impaction using a strong wormer straight off like Pramox, so it's worth taking veterinary advice, they may suggest you use something like Panacur Guard first, and they may give you bute in case of colic.
