Hi - I need to get a back person out but not sure what I should be looking for...I've seen various threads on here where people have said be sure you get someone who knows what they are doing...but how do you know?
They don't need to be referred from your vet (though that would usually be the case if you are looking for a physio), but they do need your vet's ok for the back person to see your horse. I think it's mainly to make sure that the horse doesn't have a medical condition that the work could affect.
Recommendations from people you trust would normally be the best way - instructors, perhaps also your vets and saddle fitter could suggest someone? Qualifications imho only count for so much so I wouldn't be too swayed by someone with a massive long list of qualifications! Though you would want them to have insurance. The way the person is with the horse is v important, as it doesn't matter how good a back person they are if your horse doesn't trust them!!
depends if you are trying to treat an injury, supple up tight muscles, etc. Best to read up on the different approaches and see which would suit your horse best. Quite alot of back people have training in more than one area - ie my back lady does mctimony (chiro), but also does bowen which (to my understanding!) works on the muscles to loosen them.
Thanks this is great advice. My boy has started to drag his feet coming down hills and is being treated for poor hoof balance / coffin joing arthritis in his forelimbs - I think he is tight in his back/hips and shoulder. Just think its worth getting someone to look him over as he's bound to have developed a wierd way of walking to compensate. Have phoned my vet and they have recommended someone who is a physio!
Yep, veterinary physios all the way. If someone called themselves a back person i would run a mile in my best trainers. going by vets recomendation is a great idea
