What should I offer?

Your advice please. I've been offered a 16.3hh ID x Trakenher rising 6 year old who was broken last year and hacked around the village proving sane and sensible. I've seen a video of him loose jumping and he has an enormous pop but obviously green. He's very laid back and easy to handle and, by the way, has a very pretty head.

However, he's spent all winter in a barn and is skin and bone at the moment. I suspect he'll scrub up into a very good looking horse in a month or so.

So, what do you think is a reasonable offer for him?

From what you have described, unless he has some very good breeding, I should think somewhere round the 3 thousand mark?? Atleast thats what I would offer, if hes seriously in poor conidition, then depending on how bad he is, less, maybe as little as £2000, if they are going to find it hard to sell him.. ? Dont know if this is any help to you !

Free!

If they dont want the horse and you do.
the market is bad, horses arnt selling.
You want to give it a home.

If they want money, what hes worth as meat or a little more.

Im not being stupid, i have been given horses before, the owners are realistic in what the horse it worth at the time and the stagnant market.

depending on his breeding. if he has nice breeding maybe 2-4000. but remind them of his condition and get them to lower the price or ''pretend'' to walk away. most come back and accept a good offer.

It depends on what he is worth to you....Dependant on what you think his potentil is, and whether you will use that potential. As well as his breeding. To me he would be worth £2-3k. To someone who is going to use him as a serious show or competition horse, and they can see the potential, he could be worth double that. Its so difficult to price horses.

Depends what you can get away with - have you asked them what they want for him? Would be useful to get a ball park.

I'd say 1.5 - 2.5k max really, unless he has really good breeding, or you think he has huge potential.

He sounds like a nice horse, but basically he's a 6yr old who has done nothing. Even if he has lots of potential, to make him worth while as a resale you'll need to put in lots of work on his schooling and get him out competing, ideally affiliated - that will all take time and money, and even then, unless he looks to have the scope and aptitude to go above 1.10m ish, I think you're possibly looking at a resale value of around 5 - 6k.

Of course you might not be looking to sell him on, or he might be really super talented, its impossible to tell without seeing him and that obviously would make a difference.
