What should I use to preserve wood and stop chewing?

I have just moved my horses to some rented grazing. The post and rail fencing needs treating. In your experience which product will also stop horses chewing the wood? I am keen to avoid putting an electric fence inside the field to keep them away from the post and rail.

Good old fashioned creosote always worked well, unfortunately it isn't what it was, we now use a creosote subsitute and water it down so to speak with used engine oil!!! sounds gruesome, but works incredibly well - none of them chew where it's coated! comes out really thick and dark too.
