Seppie currently gets 3 scoops (small ones) of Veteran Vitality and 2 scoops of Hi-fi original, she'll soon be on Spillers slow release cubes and Spillers conditioning fibre - how much of these should she have? She's 15.3, 27 and 460kgs. We need to get at least 60kgs on her (safely off course). We will also be adding vegetable oil to her feeds.

Sox currently has 3 scoops of alpha beet & 1 scoop of healthy hooves at night and 2 scoops of alpha beet & 1 1/2 scoops of Healthy hooves in the morning, plus pink powder senior and vegetable oil. He is 14.1, 15 years old and 378kgs - he also needs at least 60kgs on. He will be changed to spillers conditioning fibre and spillers hi fibre cubes - what rations should he be having to put the weight on him safely (he's previously had laminitis). Is there anything else he can have as well?

Not sure about quantities of feed, try contacting Spillers for an idea on the conditioning fibre and cubes. I would however feed micronised linseed instead of the oil, much cheaper in the long run, more digestible and adds weight much better (coming from someone with a poor dooer TB who has tried everything in the book until I found linseed) :)

Mine have vege oil daily in their feeds
I would give D&H a ring and get a pro tailored diet for each of them. They know their stuff well.

The feeds they are changing to have been sggested by a Spillers nutritionist

Did the nutritionist not tell you what quantities to feed?

Did they give a reason for changing from Veteran Vitality to the Slow Release Cubes (apart from the fact that they want you to feed Spillers!). Both feeds have the same calorie count, so will have similar weight gain effects if fed at the same quantity.

What type and amount of forage are these horses getting? Ad lib good quality hay/haylage/grazing is the best way to get weight on poor doers.

What are the teeth of the 27yo like? Have you considered feeding a partial hay replacer to her?

Start with a small amount added into your current feed, gradually increase the amount of new feeds whilst reducing the amount of old feeds used. When the changeover is complete weigh the horse using a weigh-tape, weighing again q week later to see whether lost or gained weight and adjust feed accordingly. Use weigh-tape weekly at the same time to get the most accurate comparison. eg after riding but before feeding, or after breakfast but before turnout. Aim for slow steady weight gain.

The ones needing weight have ad lib hay.
Both have had ther teeth doing - the 27 yr old has no probs with her teeth. The veteran vitality wasn't agreeing with her forward going ness wise, the slow release energy cubes should quieten her down more (to see her ridden you would think she was a spritely youngster!!
