Just thinking ahead here and wanting to have a bit of fun on Patches this summer. The plan is to do a few clear rounds and maybe (if movement improves alot) some prelims at dressage and maybe the odd showing class. She's CHAPS registered (and I know I'd have to register myself as well).

Problem is, what classes (in general...not necessarily CHAPS) can you enter with a cob that you don't turn out either completely clipped and hogged, or flowing mane and feather etc?

She's 15.1 hh

Here she is, showing how she's usually kept..pulled mane:

So you don't have to be hogged or full mane and feather? I don't mind plaiting her up if that's necessary, although I'd need lessons on the tail!

If you plait her you could do show hunter? Some riding clubs dont need cobs to be hogged, There are a couple near me that dont need them to be hogged? You could do riding club horse? A jumping class, Handy pony? these are just some that you could have fun in, plus riding club level you have allsorts of horses in classes

Cant you tell i did anything and everything with my mare

Family horse, handy horse, riding club horse, mother and daughters horse - if you let her mane grow a little, you could do a running cob plait in it for cobby classes.

Nope not for local shows anyway. Have done several 'Cob Type' Classes. Sparks (horse in siggy) legs are clipped, mane and tail plaited. I show her in either a double or Pelham and plain tack.

I did a couple of cob type classes last summer with my over-height dales who is very au naturel! Most of them were hogged + clipped but a few weren't, but they were plaited instead.

Cob Type is correct...don't need to be hogged and trimmed

You can also do riding club horse, which has 1 jump in, you could also go in open showing, novice classes if you like, I'm trying to imagine her plaited and wondering about ridden hunter...always worth a try and get a judges opinion

Ooooo pretty donkey te he he!!!

I think she could actually do ok in hunters...probabaly abit stockier than what they want, but hey its only abit of fun!!!

Sounds like you are in for a fun summer!!

Oh this is an interesting post because I was hoping to do something with my chap latter this year or next and he is quite similar to your girl but coloured (see below, the last 2 pictures)!

Technically Patches is also a coloured as she's blue and white. You can see her markings a bit better in the pics I posted in response to Tinker's first post.

I never really know what do to. I don't want to hog her and I'm not fond of all that hair. I keep her as most people would keep their "average" horse and I honestly thought it would have meant no showing for me.

Live and learn...looks like we all in for a good summer! Good luck to you! Your horsey is gorgeous!

Oh sorry Patches, I should have said Piebald not coloured, is just what I say for my boys when I should say Piebald!

Thanks-you, Bods is a but of a stunner but then I’m biased! He’s only just in the process of being backed so it would probably only be some very low level in-hand stuff I would do. I don’t think his confirmation is really good enough to do any more then that.

I hope your showing goes well! You will have to pass me tips as this showing stuff will be all new to me!

You'd maybe get away with small hunter? Its under 15.2, plaited mane, pulled tail, but you'd have to trim any furry feet etc! I have to with Asti as she has a surprising amount of feather for a 3/4 TB! Would need hunter style bridle (flat nose and brow band) and double or pelham with 2 reins.

Not show hunter though, I've found last year they are increasingly aiming for flicky-toed show ponies (the judges) rather than a good old fashioned hunting pony...

Riding club horse definitely, and maybe if you see classes like equitation tests etc? And Best combination of course!

It's new to me too JoBo! I have no idea what I'm doing and I'm pretty sure Patches conformation isn't up to standard either. Will only be very low key local stuff for fun.

As for the coloured debate. Even I think she'd look a bit of a fraud in a coloured class! When you say coloured, most people think of horses more like yours.

Hmm...I'm thinking I might give the showing a miss then. I don't want to ride with two reins or in a pelham really...not me. I'm only a novice at this riding lark.

Ridden Cob
Coloured Horse
Riding Club Horse
Best Combination (usually ridden in snaffle)
Best Turned Out
Novice Working Hunter

You can still take part and have fun, you have a lovely girl there show her off and have some fun. It is fine for novices to ride in a snaffle at local level so get out there and go for it!

I have a blue and white to, but you cannot see his markings as much as yours (only really when clipped now!)

Still enter the coloured classes, show them that the blue and whites can do it just as well!!!

Good luck and have fun!!

Awww thanks Drummer! It's such a shame they have to fade isn't it?

She's a special girl to me and she used to do alot of showing with her previous owner (Just_Nigel). I know she enjoys it and I'm keen for her to get something from me, after she's given me so much.

You can still see her patches so I don't see why you can give coloured classes at local level a go as well. It will test the judges if nothing else

If you are going to do Riding Club Horse then snaffle is correct. Coloured and Cob Classes it is more correct to have either a Double or Pelham (but can get away with snaffle at local level) or go for a pelham with the same mouth piece as your normal bridle, with short shanks and use either a leather or eastic curb (rather than a chain) and just don't take a contact on the curb rein (it's not a hard to ride with two reins as you think). That's what I do.

The main thing is to have fun. You not a fraud at all to go in coloured classes. You colud also do some inhand classes to start with. All the local shows I have gone to have been really friendly, so go on give it a try.

the only frauds in "coloured" classes are owners of Duns, Palomino's, Appaloosa's,..............
