Does anyone know if steroids, particularly cortisone, show up on a blood test? Our boy had his bloods taken when he was vetted 8 months ago and the bloods still exist so we are thinking about having them screened. Will steroids show up after all this time they have been in storage?

Thank you

on your other thread it seemed to suggest the vets who did the vetting acted for the previous owner also. I think you will have to speak to your own vet to find out what the horse could have been given and whether those substances could still be tested for. However if the vetting vet was the previous owner's vet I would ask your own vet to request the bloods be transferred to themselves on your behalf. (you paid for the vetting after all) Then get your own vet to request the tests. They may also take a current blood sample and test at the same time so they have something to compare and see if there are any significant differences. When this sort of thing happens I am afraid I am always very suspicious of the previous owner and what they may be hiding.

When horses are dope tested at events, steroids will show in blood samples if the withdrawal periods haven't been adhered to. Depends on which type of steroid is used and how many joints have been medicated, as to how long they will be detectable in a blood test.

ETA. Not sure if bloods that have been stored for several months would still show up there were steroids present when the sample was taken.
