Has anyone any idea what size driving carriage and pony would a 3.5 lorry take? With some careful arrangements inside would it take a Shetland and four wheeler? Have any driving people used this sized lorry to transport a driving combination and if so could you please tell me how you did it?

I know someone who competes a mini and transports it in a transit type 3.5. The pony goes behind the driver with his own side ramp, then there is a wall splitting his area with the back half and a rear ramp for the carriage to go up. She only uses a 2 wheeler but the pony is rear facing - if he travelled sideways/herringbone then she would easily get a small 4 wheeler in with him.
You'd have to just look at the weights of pony and potential carriage, and tally that with the available weight in the lorry, but it should be do-able for a shetland.

Thank you - that's very interesting.

I have a 3.5t lorry, and my lorry can take a four wheeler and a shetland pair or single, fairly easily.

Not sure how to tell you how we did it. I have a transit type lorry, the living and pony space are all one big space - in theory you could fit up to four bigger ponies (not legally on weight, just in terms of physical space). I tend to put the carriage in the front of the space, then put the ponies further back, over the rear axle. This is a particularly spacious lorry I think. I have more space in it than some people I've seen with 7.5t. But I don't have separate living. There is a luton though. It's a fab lorry really, we were very lucky to find it.

Thank you that is so helpful. Was the lorry very expensive? OH can't decide how much we would need to spend on a secondhand one. Is your Shetland mini or standard?

I was just about to tell you about this borderreiver!
I'm doing a conversion on a long trailer, carriage at the front, space for two ponies or one horse (without partition) behind. I'd do it the other way round in a van, put the carriage behind and the horses in front of I had the choice xx

ive got a 3.5t mercedes sprinter had an iveco daily before and regularly took a 12ft long victoria carriage with 15hh cob
put the carriage on first with a winch then cob on the rear

No, not expensive at all - it was an ebay bargain! Very affordable!

My shetlands are mostly minis, but I have an 11.1hh mini traditional cob, I have carried her & her four wheeler, and had room for another pony if I'd wanted to.

I have seen someone with a trailer, a Cheval Liberte, they had a 13.00 or 13.2 pony and the carriage went in upright, ie on one side, with pony in the nearside pony space.
Best to go to a big event, there are quite a few options.

Well planned I don't think there would be a limit with normal non heavy horses and marathon carriages. There's at least 2 single 16hh+ KWPNs on the circuit with 3.5 tonners + fit in camping equipment. An easier alternative would be to get a lightweight carriage trailer. There is one 750kg stabling trailer for sale Shetland sized currently. We just have a flatbed that takes 2 Pony team carriages but is still under 750.
