thanks to everyone who posted on my previous thread about this. ive now decided this is what i need to do....

so what size should i do? am thinking about 20ftx20ft infront of my stable, which i would be leaving open for him.Or is this too small? it would only be for 1 horse as he lives alone. Also, what surface would be best? Type1hardcore, woodchips? My horse would be spending most of his time in there just now, with maybe the odd hour or so turned out into the field...

thanks:)

You can start off with a small area and then you can assess how it works. You can then either leave it the same size. Change to a longer lasting surface or expand?

Obviously money & space are the main restrictions.

20' isn't very big but it is bigger than just a stable.

I made a hard standing area in my field. It is 20' x 40'ish and I have my round feeder on there. They can go out to the field. They spend about half their time on the hard standing and half of it in the field. I do have some green stuff still showing, not a lot though

.

It started off as a hardcore area but it gradually got muddy and eventually I concreted it.

concrete with bark chip on top? or road planings.
Our concrete yard is 50x20 for two ponies with stables doors open.
Driveway is 300yrdsx 12ft and they mooch around quite happily on that.

I would say go for bigger than 20x20 if you can.
Ours is 100x100. I realise this is probably too big but it is ideal for us as we can turn-out in all weathers. We used road plannings. My friend uses bark on hers with no problems.
