What size horse would you put in a 12x9 stable?

I think up to 14.2hh-15hh would be OK, anything bigger or particularly chunky might feel too restricted. I have a 13.2 in a 10 by 12 which is a nice size for him, my bigger horse stands in it to be groomed sometimes but I wouldn't want her living in a stable of that size.

My chunky 15hh used to be in a 10x10 stable and had enough room. Wouldn't like anything much bigger in there ideally but at our old yard there was a 16.3 in a stable that size for a few months until a bigger one was available.

Not ideal but he lay across the middle and no harm done.

Thanks he is currently 2 and his withers are about 14.2 and his bottom 15.2 lol... he is med/heavy weight and will probably make 15.2 -16 hands

Yeah I wouldn't put him in a 10 x 10... but I keep looking at it and thinking I don't know, its the fact its 12 foot that helps, but its the 9 foot wide that makes me uneasy X

I forgot to say he will be in it overnight only 12 mths of the year

Set up is its in a shed thingy so we could make it bigger into an L shape so it ended up 9 wide for half of the stable then 12x12 rest of it... the yard i am on already has one bigger like this that she would happily swap with me..... but i don't want to make a fuss she would swap her same size horse into the 9 x 12...... we were going to make it bigger but think they don't really want to, what I am trying to say is I don't want to make a fuss, everyone is trying to keep everyone happy!!!! lol I will try him when he moves there in 2 weeks time, he has to learn what a stable is first:eek:

I don't think it would do him any harm as long as he's not the type to get cast all the time, if its your only option I would try it and see how he gets on. I have recently moved one of my horses into a bigger stable and she definitely feels the cold more in there, but then she has more room to move around. Mucking out is also easier in a bigger stable because there is more room for you to move around them and they don't stir it up so much.

oh no we are evil we don't muck out around horses they get thrown out into the field all winter hehe rain or shine!

id say 15hh is you had to but preferablly under 14.2
dont they use smaller stables in germany
and if you put a bigger horse in you might want to check they can move and make sure they are not left alone to long in case they get stuck or distressed

Young horses who aren't used to stables often get cast.
So the bigger the better, however I've know then get cast in huge boxes as they can be a bit stupid at times.

At a guess I'd say 15h. Depends on build too though, a 15.2 that takes a 5'9 rug would have more room to turn than a 14.2 that takes a 6'.

Thankyou so much for all taking the time to reply..... he has a very compact back, but I think I need to go and see.... the sides aren't that high as it has a walkway next to it, so will feel bigger to the horse as he can turn with his head out over the walls, does this make sense?

My 15.2hh middleweight who wears a 6'3" rug is in a 9x12 stable and is fine. She isn't the type to get herself cast though, and lays diagonally so she has space

My 16h mare (6'6" rugs) lived in a 10' square stable for a winter when the planning dept were messing us around. She did fine, but is not a stupid horse - she knew she could lie down but not roll. I wouldn't trust my other horse in a smaller box - he is more silly! As someone said, if anything is going to get cast its a youngster... (Funnily enough, when we built the new yard my mare moved into a 12x18 box and got cast!)

I had a 16.2 hunter in a 11 x 10. Not ideal, but she turned around carefully! She was turned out every day but it didn't bother her at all - think of stalls, horses did and do cope OK in them and they are far more restrictive.

Ah but the difference with stalls and a too small box is that a horse was unable to turn round in a stall or roll, so couldn't get themselves in a position to get cast.. The first riding school I worked in had stalls, and the ponies were fine. They went out in the day though.
