I would like to bring my horse home for good. I have enough land to keep him and another to make a working area of 20x40. Obviously the work area will take time to save enough money to turn into a sand school, but I will be saving quite a bit when hes kept at home. Its a 30-40 minute ride the stables so would still be able to get there for lessons every week or so.

Anyway, obviously I would like him to have company so am thinking of getting a pony for my girls. What kind of size could I get away with. I want as small as poss, but rustic enough. They are 5 and 6 at the mo, so prob somethng bigger than a shettie. Would also like something I could learn to drive with as well (think thats the right expression), just a little caleche. What kind of size and breed do you think everyone????

Welsh Section A - will do them now and last them for several years, my daughter was on hers till she was 11 and after that we had a small 14 year old on her. Mine is also a cracking driving pony.

Exmoor/Dartmoor all the way for me, generally lovely natured ponies and great with kids.

I'm a little wary of kids with Welshies after buying a bad one, but I know there are good 'uns out there...

Good luck :)

Unless exceptional, I would avoid section A's like the plague. They do not make good kiddy ponies as a rule, they are just too sharp.
Dartmoor, a small newfie, anything thats native and sane!
If you have a local PC, ask about there if they know of any good ponies for sale.

Thanks for all the ideas. Will have a look round and see what I can find. The Meren pony looks lovely, but just a bit too big as I need it to be something my OH is less likely to notice lol!!!!!!

Another vote for a NF :)

Go for a chunky smaller version, they live on fresh air and are very hardly. My boy is a great weight carrier and has never been sick or sorry, he is 13.3hh so a little too big for my youngest daughter other than lead rein but my 7 year old is learning to ride on him... will be a while before she takes him off on her own but he stands like a saint to be pampered :)

W have just bought a section a for my 2 and a half year old daughter.
He is perfect for her to lead, handle and ride (with me leading)
Other bigger girls ride him and he is and angel.
So no they are not (all) too sharp.

Any native would be great and as suggested around 11hh.

Nighmare isn't it? I just wish I could use the same tactic as when I buy new clothes - "What, this old thing? I've had this for ages!" and then guilt trip him because he doesn't notice what I wear. VERY hard to do when its hairy little native pony! I've tried passing a Shetland off as a sporran but he didn't fall for it! :D
