Hi all!

So, my little lady is coming over from ireland in 2 weeks and I live in snowdonia which means the weather is either glorious or monsoon (There is no in-between) so I would ideally like to get a rug for her so she's at least warm if the weather is vile (We do not have a stable on our land yet so rugging is essential).

Below is a picture of her, shes not particularly long but she is a registered ID standing at 16hh. Could I have size recommendations from people please? I have asked the breeder but he's always "too busy"/ doesn't care so i'm doing all this blind.

Any help would be greatly received

She looks lovely, and has I guess been living out in all types of weather without a rug, so the breeder possibly has no idea what size rug she would need. Even in Snowdonia are you sure a yearling needs a rug? My WB never had a rug on in his life until he came in to start his training and was stabled. He was about 15.2 and took a 6' rug at the start of that winter, and was 16h, partially clipped and needed a 6'3" by the end of it. But I would have thought a baby horse living out would be better with plenty of grass/hay and no rugs she can get tangled up in?

Thank you :D I'm always nervous sharing a picture of her because she looks so scruffy haha.

I will let her go naked for a while and see how she is (I'm just a bit protective on my horses, always worried they're cold!) but I guess you're right, wouldn't want those long legs getting tangled! D:

If shes from a typical ID breeder in Ireland she wont have seen a rug, never mind worn one! My friend is over in Southern Ireland and their weather seems very cold and wet compared to over here as well. I'm sure she will be fine :)

Ha! If I had a criticism if her turnout it would be that she needs a couple of twigs sticking out of her mane, a bit of bush in her tail and some artistically placed smears of mud to look like real quality!

ETA why do my feeble attempts at smiley faces never work!

Gorgeous girl you lucky thing

I would say 16 hh she may need 6-6 or 6ft9 depending, my first ID was 14.2 as a 15 month old and matured to 16hh, this one is going to be a BIG!!!! girl as 16hh as yearling

Well that's according to the breeder but the video I have been sent does show her as quite a tall lady!

https://youtu.be/SGZq20lrhDk Feel free to take a look! This is just her trot up! Estimated size over 17hh more towards 17.3hh fully mature. This sale is an unseen sale but I will post updates once she arrives :) I'm hoping all is correct with her because she's going to be my competition horse when she's older! I'm 6ft so need a big horse to not make me look silly :)

Oh my word, a proper hunter. Treasure her and look forward to the future, she is going to be very special and take absolutely ages to mature.

Rugs - please don't, a good hedge or bit of woodland to stand under will give shelter. Youngsters play rough and so many accidents can happen with youngstock in rugs.

wouldnt even think about rugging her at this young age, plenty of fibre, grass or hay should be fine and i would add a balancer to make sure she gets all vits and mins she needs to grow slowly....she looks like she will be very nice when she matures...good luck with her.

No rug just plenty of hay when the weather is cold and do not groom her in the winter. Lovely looking horse.

Oh, I love a big horse! (I know I have a 13.2hh) My cob was sold as a 14.3hh though by a dealer which had git her from Ireland. She looks a beauty and she does look like a tall lady. What do you intend to do with her?

My 17 hander was measured by me at 14.3 as a yearling and 16.1 as a two year old. If she's 16 hands now then I think you've got an 18 hand horse there. She's a lovely mover, more pictures when she arrives please :)

Please do not rug any youngster. An ID will not need a rug at any time if they have a hedge or something to shelter. No youngster should need a rug in the UK between May and December. Even if your yearling should need a rug next winter do not buy it now because it will grow and the rug will be the wrong size!

All I put on my ID when she was 15 months old is an old canvas type rug which was all that was available at that time. She lived out full time till she was 5 I think something like that The canvas rug surficed her. Till I moved yards and she had a stable of her own in 1995 then I started giving her warmer rugs though I did use old stable rugs under turnout in the harshest winter, she started in a 5ft nine then 6ft etc. Depends on the growth spurt of the individual, so i would wait till she is over here and measure her and if she is borderline the bigger rug i would er for the next one up

this. If you buy a rug now she will have grown and you will need the next size up by Nov. The best way to determine rug size is to measure and then to buy locally so you can exchange if it doesn't fit.
