I'm struggling with what saddle to get for my boy. He is estimated to be around 3 and a half YO (hes a rescue) so he is going to change shape many times! I want to go for a synthetic as they are the most easily adjusted (either a wintec or a thorowgood). I prefer the thorowgoods (as I had a wintec before and it was horribly uncomfortable and the bloody girth straps kept splitting) however, looking on their website they don't seem to do a size smaller than 17inches, and I think this would be too long.

Does anyone know if they do a 16/16.5 inch saddle? Or does anyone think a 17inch would fit my boy? It would definitely be better for me as I have a rather large bottom!!

Wintec do pony saddles that come in sizes smaller than 17".. I got the dressage version for my pony because I found it really hard to find any of the other models in a 16", although I was in quite a rush to get hold of one and I think they do exist but none of the shops/websites I tried had them in stock at the time so maybe they are quite rare. As far as I know thorowgood don't do any smaller than 17" apart from their pony club saddles, but in my opinion the wintec pony is much nicer!

I have a 17" Kent and masters cob saddle for my 14hh cob. The cob saddle is very compact for the size of seat but you do need to have it fitted by a saddler.

Mine who is a very similar size and stamp is fine with a 17" but you'd need to put one on first to see. Probably better to call a saddler out, even if its just for advice on what to look for and then get them back to fit it, if they dont stock synthetics etc

because I would just rather get a second hand one for a fraction of the price and then get it fitted rather than get a saddle fitter out and getting a brand new one.

Shires do leather and synthetic adjustable saddles - I have a 16 1/2 wide for my 14h1 welshie.

I have a close contact - Optimus puissance

They both retail at about £450 but I got them in the sales for £250 :)

Yes. But a saddle fitter can provide you a template so you can go get one that actually fits rather than a hit and miss affair off eBay. You are not obliged to buy a new one off saddle fitter.
