I don't know about 'teach' but on the lunge you can do:

trot poles
raised trot poles
shorten and lengthen strides (use trot poles to encourage this)
small jumps - therefore can get horses used to fillers

I often spiral my circles in (in trot and canter) and then encourage my horse to leg yield out to a large circle as well.

I will be going on the lunge in my lesson on saturday

! I havent done this since i was about 7 and started riding so im dreading it. My RI is doing this to improve my position with out me having to worry about what Jed is doing. When my position is where she wants it to be i will then be able to work on Jed and not have to worry about what im doing, Does this make sense?? (i think she is trying to turn me into a grand prix dressage rider and get me out of my show jumping ways)

Also i long rein jed to encourange him to bend on the right rein.

Stacie- you will enjoy it and probably be the most productive lesson you've had for a long time! i really enjoy lunge lessons. just relax!!!

You can train your horse to respond to minute signals on the lunge - having spent 6 months using lungeing to rehabiliate my TB, we've got our signals down to a fine art! test whether you can get your horse to walk, trot, canter and back down to halt based on body language:

To start with I used arms spread to make my posture more 'aggressive' for faster, hands together making my posture rounded and 'kind' for slow, and finally crossed my free hand over the other one for halt. Softening and turning away slightly was the 'come here' command for the end of the session. It was great fun as we learned together - I learned what postures communicated to him and he learned to spot the tiniest change of posture.

Made me (and him) much more aware of bodylanguage.
