Was Emily King using at Badminton? Just interested as that could have been a really horrible situation if the horse hadn‘t been so well behaved. Obviously I’m not suggesting the stirrups were at fault, they maybe her favourites and she is probably happy to use them again ? but just pondering why she didn’t have stirrups that released her foot. Any ideas? Are ‘safety’ stirrups not always a good idea? Thanks

i'd imagine you need to be at a certain angle for the release to happen which would be the case with pretty much any safety stirrup. i think she lost the left stirrup so it was the right stirrup pulled over to the left of the horse that she was caught in, possibly therefore that her foot was twisted in it so the outside of the stirrup wasn't naturally on the outside of the foot as she hung in it.

I have sprenger bow thingies which I like but are quite heavy and so have looked out of interest at others. Luckily I don‘t have any desire to part with my money for a new set of stirrups ‘just because‘ so will stick with mine.

obviously I may re think my position should someone come along with a horror tale of an accident caused by bow balance strirrups ?. however I will mainly plan to stay on my horse as that seems the best and cheapest option overall. No Badminton for me!

I think it was because her foot was over the other side so the release bit was against the saddle. I personally think all of the similar stirrups (with some kind of side release) would have had similar issues. Very unfortunate, but lucky her horse was so good.
